I'd love to see what the K3 and K4 screen look like with no border at all. Just the screens with text. The colour of the border can influence how the background and text look so take this away and see how it looks on its own. That would be a good comparison to tell if the screens really are different in any way. Well, sounds good to me anyway.

My K4 looks good! But all this analysis is interesting to read.

The bevel may affect perceived lightness of the background of the device on its own, but I think if you have them side by side it's harder to fool your eyes. It's like Tom Cruise can look big by himself, but you put him next to a 6'2 guy and he looks small. Hence, camera angles and the milk crate ![]() In any event, if one thing looks better than another to me, I don't know if it helps to know that's just my human visual system messing with me. It's not like I'm going to replace my eyes with Terminator vision. Of course according to Buddhism, the physical universe is an illusion, so once I accept that there is no kindle, I can stop worrying about this. |

I did some colorimeter measurements of both screens (and Kindle 2 and Kindle 1 to boot as well). Here are the results: Kindle 4 vs Kindle 3 screen comparison.
![]() To me and my colorimeter Kindle 3 and Kindle 4 screens look very similar to the point of me declaring them identical. |

I'm not sure if it's your ereaders or your measuring instrument(more likely), the "white state" lightness(screen's background) seems a bit low for both @ 64 comparing to the spec of 70. My i1 spectrophotometer shows both the K3 & K4 at about 70. Last edited by shinew; 10-12-2011 at 09:41 PM. |

![]() Anyway, IMO it's either your K3 & K4's eInk Pearl screens are out of spec or your spyder3print SR is not accurate. A dE of 4.8 from the spec is too large to ignore. |
