You're not telling Kovid anything he doesn't already know. Calibre is converting correctly. You have a extra paragraph between paragraphs not just a line. Convert my attached rtf to see the difference.

Our two rtf files look the same but convert differently because I used paragraph spacing to put distance between the paragraphs.

I also included your rtf converted to epub using my default calibre settings.

The only way to guarantee the cover you see in calibre will be the cover of your epub is to convert the file. Even a epub to epub conversion will set the cover.

Sigh, for more years than I can remember I have not used Styles or added spacing, simply relying on the creating a new paragraph by just hitting enter twice.

I suppose that's is all over now.

I'll admit I don't use RTF and I fully understand your position. Considering the way you do it is the norm for inserting a line between paragraphs in RTF documents.

Beyond that it won't preserve scene breaks for the majority of RTF files because people create documents like you do and to correct the perceived extra lines folks will have to resort to the same setup I use, check both options Remove spacing between paragraphs and Insert Blank line to bring the space between paragraphs to what seems normal.

What program do you use for RTF?

@oldbwl,

Here are 3 simple ways to convert your test RTF to an EPUB with line spacing as you like it.
  1. Convert the test RTF to EPUB with the following in the Convert - Look&Feel - ExtraCSS box
    Code:
    p {margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0}
    [This may be what dwanthny was referring to as his default Calibre settings -- Edit: having seen the above apparently not]

    You'd have to experiment to see whether this works for all your RTFs.

  2. Open the test RTF in Word and Save-As Webpage-filtered. Import the resulting HTML file into Calibre, which will turn it into a ZIP file. Convert ZIP to EPUB with the Look&Feel - ExtraCSS box empty.

    This option should work for all RTFs.

  3. Stop using empty paragraphs as spacers in RTF files. Only use them where specifically required e.g. scene-breaks. Then convert RTF to EPUB with the Look&Feel - ExtraCSS box empty.

    You could easily set up a macro in Word to remove double-^p's whilst making sure that 3-or-more ^p's were not removed. Editing an existing RTF could then be a simple [Alt]+key operation. If you want any help creating such a macro send me a PM.

Thank you thank you thank you,

This setting regime works, I also reduce the indent to 0.0em and now I can continue as before. This is all I was looking for.

I downloaded the RTF and I converted it to ePub and found there is a problem.

In the CSS I have ...

Code:
.calibre2 {
    display: block;
    margin-bottom: 1em;
    margin-left: 0;
    margin-right: 0;
    margin-top: 1em
    }
in the XML files I have ...

Code:
<p class="calibre2"> </p>
So yes, the line spacing between paragraphs is more than doubled. The margins should be 0 and not 1em on the top and bottom.

Is that a bug that there are indents in your ePub when in your RTF there are none?

The RTF and the epub I attached above are not related. The rtf was my example of a rtf that should convert fine. The epub was converted from oldbwl post 870 using my default settings which include a 1.1em indent.

I converted the ePub using no margins and I did get a rather overly large spacing between the paragraphs.

All I have to do is reconvert the files? I'll try it again, but the ones I converted weren't showing the covers either. Before I start another round of conversions is there anything I should do? Any preferences I should make so I don't waste another day?

*update* after playing around with some things..I found that reconverting them to epub and clicking *use cover from source file* does the trick! THANK YOU ALL! After this major overhaul I think I might be able to start enjoying my nook!

I'm confused, are you needing help? You do know oldbwl has gone his merry way with a workable solution, don't you?

If you wish to champion the rtf cause with Kovid have fun but I don't have the desire to continue.

However if you are looking for help or clarification I'm willing to help.
