The closest thing to a new electronics I had then was my 'Robbie the Robot' toy... No... wait... I had one of the very first 'portable radios.' A transistor radio the size of a large hardback book. I got my first 'computer' when I was about 28. It was a "Vic 20," twenty K of memory and connected to my TV. It used cartridge style games, had a monochrome display, and played text-only games. I could program Basic scripts to change the color of the display, convert temperatures from F to C, but had no storage ability. I didn't have a 'real' computer until I was 36, and in Grad School. It was an IBM with a 200M hard drive running Dos. Programs had cardboard templates that fit over the Function keys for special commands such as 'bold,' 'underline,' 'indent,' etc. I spent a lot more time face to face with people back in those days. Amazing what I was able to accomplish with Basic, a couple of KBs, and a cassette recorder. |

Yup. For me it was the CoCo 3, Basic, about 4 kB RAM, and a cassette recorder. Even drew a donkey and animated his mouth (he opened it every time I hit a certain key) so he could introduce a segment on one of our home movies. Drawing that was a core. You had pretty much tell the computer the location of every pixel. Fortunately, the screen was very low resolution. But since I'm already in danger of derailing one thread with talk of my early computing, and since I just now mentioned a donkey, here's a donkey joke: ![]() |

I had open WiFi until the day I got a nastygram from my service provider letting me know that Sony had contacted them about a certain movie that I had (1) never heard of, and (2) downloaded illegally. That's when I decided to secure my connection with a password. It's also about the same time that certain neighbors who no longer next door stopped sitting on their front porch everyday with their laptops. Last edited by WT Sharpe; 05-04-2015 at 10:43 AM. |

Actually clueless people with open WiFi is becoming a thing of the past. Since most ISPs now install a router with the wireless set up secured by default. Though they do print the password on the router so if you have access to the router your in. And, WPS is pretty cool idea, if only more things would support it. |

I find, at my age, that I have starting thinking a lot about the hereafter.
It doesn't matter if I am in the kitchen or in the bedroom, in the basement or in the attic, in the living room or out back in the storage shed. It seems I'm always thinking "what am I here after?" |

In the early 60's, NYC radio disk jockey Murry Kaufman, known as Murry the K, entertained us as we sat in our cars parked at the beach with our girlfriends, watching the submarine races . (At least, that was the reason we gave our parents for parking at the beach at night.) Murry the K would say 'just tell your lover that it's all about the 'hereafter.' "If you're not here after what I'm here after you're gonna be here after I'm gone, baby!" Murry the K and his swingin' soiree, with a blast from the past!

I was sitting in a bar with a friend and looking up, saw two old drunks. I said, "That's us in ten years."
"That's a mirror." |

When people post jokes that are more appropriate for the Politics and Religion joke thread, don't be surprised when they disappear.
