The B&N PC reader does the same thing for eReader format icons (which didn't really have an icon before, so no biggie).

It handles .mobi/.prc and .azw/.azw1(topaz) ebooks. I haven't tried anything else, but as I've got about 7,000 of the former, I'm happy.

NooOOoo... I've already taken time to convert all my purchased .prc/.mobi ebooks into drm-free versions and I chose a random, representative sample of the 7K+ that I moved into the "my Kindle content" directory and opened them - about 300. They all opened and worked fine.

Hunh-unh! It's a stationary TOPAZ ebook reader that can also read Mobi, PRC and AZW. As Phoenix Publishing tends to put their releases of L Neil Smith's books (including the soon-to-be-re-released "The Crystal Empire") in that gawdawful topaz format and as I've yet to get my bought-used-broken-screen Kindle 2 back from repairs as well as having discovered that trying to read a TOPAZ-formatted ebook on an iPod Touch is an exercise in civilian waterboarding-of-the-mind, I'm quite happy to read these ebooks on my (stationary) PC.

I have it on BEST authority that Bookeen is *not* waiting until 2013, they're waiting until December 22nd, 2012! And if that day arrives, they'll immediately implement their "We're gonna have a firmware update 'soon'" plan with a target date of release of December 22nd, 28012!

While I do see the logic behind them selling the ebooks, I fail to see the logic behind people *buying* DRM-rd books for the PC.
I dislike DRM to begin with and try to avoid it whenever I can but with a mobile reader I at least get the benefit of being able to take plenty of reading material along without having to carry the equivalent of several bricks.
When reading exclusively at home I doubt that there are enough benefits over a paper book to convince me to buy a DRM-ed ebook. I can't read in bed or outside and I can't really do much else except sit in front of the registered machine and read it there. That's very little convenience for a relatively high price (the reduction compared to a paperback is ridiculous if one factors in the restrictions due to DRM).

Or is there something I fail to see?

Ah, so it's basically a brief substitute while waiting for your Kindle. That makes sense.

Was just confused as it sounded as Amazon is trying to actually target a PC-only audience...

Yes, that there's a lot of people who buy e-books and don't have e-reader (I know people who read at home without PDA or e-book reader). And dislike about DRM, I'm terrible afraid it's not so wide how people who are at these forums would like to think (not my case, but I know a lot of people who think the devil isn't DRM but ePub, because they've to change the format. Don't forget electronic reading didn't begin with e-book readers).

And (while I do NOT understand why you made this comment as I was responding to four different posts I read over the course of many minutes.), it is clear (only saying this because *YOU* mentioned it. ) you need to use it.

I know, given the fact that EowynCarter expects me to 'condense' my reply to you *and* my other-topic reply to her into one message, I'll no doubt get flak from her about this separate posting ( ), but I just want to state, categorically, undeniably and without further muddling, that I have NOT ONE CLUE as to Amazon's designs vis-a-vis Kindle For PC, but I'll continue to enjoy it whilst waiting for my repaired Kindle 2.

This seems like an opportune time for a reminder about our posting guidelines, most notably N°1 :

Quote:
1. Discuss Things Politely

Our members have developed a strong, constructive online community. To help maintain this friendly, supportive atmosphere, we ask that you follow these standards of politeness.

MobileRead is intended to be a family-safe and work-safe website. Please post accordingly.

Do attempt to state your point of view in a way that avoids misunderstanding. It would be helpful to distinguish between opinion and fact, and to word your post in a way that helps others to understand what you mean. Remember that we are an international community and not all members are posting in their first language.

When things get controversial please disagree with the opinion, not the person.

Don’t say, “You’re an idiot,” or “anyone who thinks that is crazy.” Instead, say, “I disagree,” or better still, “I disagree because…”

Try to understand what someone else is saying before you react. Because we are an international forum, we have a wide diversity of cultural backgrounds, traditions, and legal systems. Remember that other members may have different laws and practices. Also remember that humor often translates poorly across languages and cultures; try to be sensitive to others when you post, and tolerant of others when you read their posts.

A rude comment is still rude, even if you follow it with a smiley, “just kidding” or “I’m only joking” or “This is meant to be humorous.”

Deliberately provoking other members (also known as “trolling”) is prohibited.
Members who post provocative or inflammatory posts will be warned. Persistent offenders may be banned. MobileRead reserves the right to limit discussion that is outside the realm of good taste, or uses foul or hateful language. We won’t tolerate any form of hate-speech.

Remember that you can use the “ignore” function to ignore a member whose posts irritate you.
emphasis mine.

Maybe they are. I know people who like to read books on their netbooks, laptops and tablets....and one thing that computers have that eInk readers don't offer (yet) is a nice color screen.

Very true. And if you're attempting to read an ebook with lots of graphics, like a photoshop manual, having color is nicer than b&w e-ink. I'll have to see if there's a photoshop Kindle book I want - just to try it out, you understand, sacrifice in the name of science.
