The 'monkey has officially been scooped. I think.

ChristianAudio has 12 audiobooks on apologetics on sale for $4.98. ChristianAudio says that the price is up to 83% off.

Frankly, many of them are old titles (although some may be updated) and newer titles that seem to have not been very popular. But if you are interested in apologetics, you should be able to find at least one or two keepers at the low price that they are now.

In case you're curious (as I was), the title that is 83% off is apparently The Kingdom of the Cults, a classic on the subject, since it shows the highest retail price ($29.95). From viewing the thumbnail image of the cover (and a not very clear one, at that), it looks like an edition which has been updated by Ravi Zacharias, a well-known apologist of recent times.

The sale lasts until the end of this month.

For those of you who frequent deal/freebie sites, you'll be familiar with a YMMV deal. Sometimes this means a deal that may not be available to everyone, but it started meaning that it was free, but depending on how far you have to travel it was a better deal for some than others. With that explanation, I can proudly announce the first time I've put out a YMMV audiobook download freebie deal.

Confused yet? Not surprising. Okay, here's the details (I found it here). Did you know that a week from Saturday (April 29 for the calendar-challenged) is the third annual Independent Bookstore Day? While you might not normally go to your local bookstore for audiobook downloads, book stores would like to change that by partnering with Libro.fm. They style themselves as an audiobook store for independent book stores. This year participating book stores will have cards that will give you access to free downloads from Libro.fm. I'd recommend calling ahead to make sure your local shop is participating. The titles being offered are:

• The Women in the Castle, by Jessica Shattuck (Harper Audio)
• A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again, by David Foster Wallace (Hachette Audio)

I was not aware of libro.fm. I'm glad to hear about them. I venture to say that most independent new book stores are fighting tooth and toenail to stay in business, because of competition from the likes of Amazon. Unfortunately, the indies seemed to have come late to the party when ebooks came into their own. Then, they were able (I'm sure it was through a third party) to start offering downloads of ebooks. It seems that they have come late to the party concerning downloadable audiobooks, too. I hope that libro.fm, and maybe other companies, provides an answer.

I've been using them for about 6 months. They are okay, but nothing special. Their source of books seems to be Downpour, as they have the same quality of encoding (variable bit rate DRM-free downloads encoded around 60 bps). The monthly membership thing is something they just started within the last month. The tie-in with independent book stores is that you can go to that store's specific link to Lirbo and they get a cut of the sales. This is the first freebie I've seen advertised from them.
