Almost all of them are probably in the PD here in the States, at least. That's not a criticism--the quality of them is likely to be much higher than you can get from any of the free book sites.

The one on the chaplain in the Korean War and on the Battle of the Bulge probably aren't in the PD, though. Not enough time has elapsed. However, there are ways for a book that isn't in the PD for time reasons to be granted a Creative Commons license or something so that it is like being in the PD, or almost so. Also, I suppose that the copyright owner could decide to relinquish his/her copyright for some reason.

Written material originally published in the US between 1923 and 1963 which did not have their copyright renewed are now in the public domain. That's why you see a bunch of free or low cost SF short stories at Amazon, most of it is courtesy of a bunch of volunteers at Distributed Proofreaders who scanned them from magazines and posted them at Project Gutenberg.

Personally, I'm not sure why you think that ebooks at Amazon that are published by a PD ebook publisher is going to be better than what you can get here or at Project Gutenberg, although I will admit that the Kindle format books at PG are all mobi format, which is inferior to AZW3 and ePub.

You know, I had forgotten about the requirement to renew the copyright. I have been under the impression that anything published in 1922 or before is fair game; anything published in 1923 or after is in copyright until ? .

Well, I did say "likely," and did not make a blanket statement. I should have said something to the effect of, "it is my impression that . . ." or something to that effect, because that is all that I have--an impression.

Going back to the copyright renewal issue . . . . I'm sure that there are a good number of books that do not have their copyrights renewed for one reason or another. Wouldn't it be great if we could get a print out from the U.S. Copyright Office of copyrights that have not been renewed, and therefore expired? Seems like it would open up a huge number of books to be reprinted for profit or otherwise. I might contact the Copyright Office one of these days and see if they actually do it, or could program their computer to generate the lists.

Unfortunately, that's not how it works. You need to do the research yourself, and if you can't find a renewal, you can pay the Library of Congress to also do a search. However, volunteers for Project Gutenberg (I'm pretty sure it was Distributed Proofreaders again) digitized all the renewals from 1923 to 1963, and someone at Stanford used it to create a copyright renewal database.

Okay. I can see that I'm really too uninformed on this topic to contribute anything to this discussion. I can see that you have a lot of knowledge on it, however. Hope you keep sharing it with us.

I am not a lawyer, and most of what I know about is from helping scan books and magazines for Distributed Proofreaders. I think there may be some types of copyright renewals that were not scanned and digitized by DP/PG, but in general, if you don't find a renewal in the Stanford copyright renewal database, and it's a novel published before 1964, it's probably in the public domain. In general, I think paying the Copyright Office to research a renewal is probably only done when someone is getting sued. Unfortunately PG went to clarify their rules after some stories/novels from SF magazines didn't show up in the renewal database, and they were still in copyright because the greater work, or renamed work that they were incorporated into had their copyright renewed, and they've never published the updated rules.

Following that link gave me an error page. I typed in the search box "copyright renewal database," and got an error page for that, too.

Don't do this just for me--as you can see I wasn't in a hurry to look at the webpage, just thought I had a few extra minutes here where I could check out the webpage--but whenever you run across the correct webpage again, would you post the URL for it on this, or some other thread, in this forum? I would like to look it over, at least.

I used that URL to look up a renewal just the other day. I just sent an email to the digital collections librarian at Stanford to ask about it, but I suspect that it's just temporarily down.
