Yes - I wasn't sure until the last quote you provided!
OK - here goes: “A friend should always underestimate your virtues and an enemy overestimate your faults” “You cannot say 'no' to the people you love, not often. That's the secret. And then when you do, it has to sound like a 'yes'. Or you have to make them say 'no.' You have to take time and trouble.” |

Oh, I should know that one. It sounds familiar, but I can't bring the book to mind

Yes! After being subjected to the AMC Godfather Marathon on TV this weekend, it seemed appropriate!

It was the image of Marlon Brando lurching around the garden that gave it to me. From the book I mostly remember things that didn't make it to the movie, like Lucy Mancini's problem with her body.
Here's an easy seasonal one: One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Pennies saved one and two at a time by bulldozing the grocer and the vegetable man and the butcher until one's cheeks burned with the silent imputation of parsimony that such close dealing implied. |

Sticking with Christmas and heartwarming/breaking, there's this quote to consider: There was a cruel custom in the neighborhood. It was about the trees still unsold when midnight of Christmas Eve approached. There was a saying that is you waited until then, you wouldn’t have to buy a tree, that “:they’d chuck ‘em at you.” This was literally true. At midnight on the Eve of our dear Saviour’s birth, the kids gathered where there were unsold trees. The man threw each tree in turn, starting with the biggest. Kids volunteered to stand up against the throwing. If a boy didn’t fall down under the impact, the tree was his. |

Damn! I am on a roll here as I recognize this one right off as well. I'll hold off to give some one else a chance though.
