You drain the pool to winterize it? I've never heard of that? I just thought you plugged the main drain, shocked it, put a pool cover on it, and drained out the pipes. That's what they do at my mom's house and she is in New England so it gets very cold there in the winter.

Here in Florida I keep the pool open and running year round. With the solar heater we can use it about 9-10 months of the year.

This pool was built in 1928. So it was not done on modern lines. The whole thing has to be drained every year and power washed, then power washed again in spring and painted if need be. Then re-filled. And the valve to open and close the drain is 81 years old, as well, so I end up at the bottom of an eight foot manhole, using the propane torch to loosen it for about fifteen minutes, then back-breaking labor with a monkey wrench to tighten it or loosen it.
