so i take it its a kepub? just checking. Yep i noticed the mad price increase as well. The library omnibus is also a good chunk cheaper on amazon but i despise there tax dodging/stealing.

It is kepub, as are all Marquez books published by Penguin this year. As are majority of Penguin books this year.
I bought all from Google Play which has the same edition in ePub.
At least Penguin got the monies, if not Kobo

First of all (as I realised after the fact), you should add the book preview to your Kobo Library BEFORE buying. Then look at the list of books in "My Library" on the Kobo site. If an epub is available, it will say "Download options: Adobe DRM EPUB" for the desired title. If there are no download options, not even PDF, I think that means that kepub is the only available option.

Any other thoughts on this out there?

Yep. The other day I wasted a 75% code on a US$28 recent Penguin title that turned out to be KEPUB. And now that Kobo's main customer service contact form requires a US or Canada phone number, I (being in Hong Kong) was unable to get my complaint heard, until I bombarded every email address they have and finally got a response. I did get a promise of a refund, and even a replacement code (70% instead of 75%), but I'm finding Kobo gradually less and less pleasant to deal with. Once KEPUBS become more widespread, I'm afraid I'll have to shop elsewhere, codes notwithstanding.

I haven't had to do it myself yet, but I understand that it is possible to strip the DRM from KePubs and then turn them into ePubs.

Is Kepub the new epub stuff that Adobe is trying to roll out? Will this be something on all sites eventually or is it just a different form of epub that Kobo sometimes has? I've gotten some notification that my epubs will have to pass a new checker as of some date or other--is that a kepub checker type thing? I hate all these different formats.

I'm seeing references that peguin uses it so I'm going to avoid buying those books on Kobo. I have seen that it's possible to convert them, but it took me long enough to figure out converting the regular epub books.

I've tried, but so far it's been so difficult, I'm considering re-buying the book somewhere else as a "real" epub and just being extra-sure I don't ever buy another kepub.

Not an expert, but AFAIK kepub is only and exclusively used by Kobo. That's why I don't know if it is Penguin's choice to have their books in kepub or is it Kobo's decision.

Yes, only it's not as easy as for epubs. Haven't tried myself, but as far as I understood the resulting file is not same as if you shop for real epub. I guess somebody at Kobo forum would know.

I'm finding this particularly annoying myself! I buy a lot of Crossway books and it was quite economical to get them at Kobo but I notice they no longer have epub downloads available for the newer books. I 'investigated' a bit and it seems to have started around Feb/Mar 2014. I contacted Crossway about it and the reply was that they have no control over how Kobo chooses to distribute the books.
