Trashy by definition means of poor or inferior quality. To call romances trashy is to say they are junk. In this particular case using the term implies all romances with sex scenes are poor quality. We all know that is not true.

What of other genres that have sex in them? Does this make them trashy too? it's just a term that is almost always taken out of context. We romance readers should not be shamed for reading books with sex in them. Misinformed people use terms like trashy, smut, mommy porn to describe romance and I'm just so tired of it.

As I recall, the books I am thinking of are Reckless Love, Fire & Rain, Outlaw, Granite Man, Warrior.

Another is Sweet Wind, Wild Wind, and I just discovered that BPL has the audio book! Downloading now!

When sexual tension is done right it makes all the difference. I prefer those novels to the jump in your bed right away stories. The only time the instant sex thing works for me is one night stands turns forever stories. I'd rather read a book with sexual tension and the big climatic scene happens toward the end then all the filler sex scenes most romances have now days.

You've accurately cited the dictionary definition, found here. But many people also refer to as "trashy" artworks, behaviors, cars, clothing, language, people, etc., that are tasteless, garish, slovenly, inappropriately bellicose or aggressive, promiscuous, inappropriately loud, inappropriately sexual, etc. I gather this second context, not the first, is what the poster was referring to in this context.

That's a derogatory meaning, what we were saying

Right. Both meanings are derogatory. The definition Blossom cited implies the work is poorly written or unimportant. The one I offered implies more about the nature of the characters and/or plot. Any book, in any genre, can fit one or both definitions, but the definitions have different meanings. I won't say more on the subject, though, as I think we're beating a dead horse.

They pretty much mean the same thing. If any of those elements are trashy then the book is of poor quality. You can not have one without the other. They are interchangeable.

Adding sex scenes does not change the quality of the book unless they are badly or awkwardly written because the author hasn't written them before but that doesn't really say the book is trashy. The trashy term is so derogatory it should never be used unless the book is poorly done or badly written.

I need to finish her first book in the Grace Valley series. I got 50% into her book Virgin River and realized I was missing some details so I stopped and started the Grace Valley series to catch up on them then we moved to Missouri and things got destitute that I had no time to read.

Right now I've started Tiffany Snow's Risky Business series. Poor heroine has no idea what the author is about to do to her. She's lived a quiet life. If there is one thing Ms Snow is excellent at is putting the heroine though the ringer. She reminds me of the old epic historicals where at the end you marvel at how the heroine is still sane! I love it though.
