Note that Bjarne Sjoustrup designed the C++ language.

The original implementation was a translator that converted C++ to C, to be compiled by the cc compiler on the Unix systems where it originated. C++ compilers that compiled to native machine code came later.

(He's a Managing Director in the Technology department at Morgan Stanley these days, and a Visiting Professor in Computer Science at Columbia University, and a Distinguished Research Professor in Computer Science at Texas A&M University.)

I think you could say the same of APL (or at least APL/360 back in the mid 70's when I was in the habit of doing things in a single line of code; and BOY was it CODE!)

In APL, you can do that, and I think you can still say the same thing.

An old friend is an APL specialist. These days he develops in a sibling of APL called K. He says he can deliver complete applications in the time other developers take to estimate how long the job will take after getting the specs.

Of course, APL and variants are specialized languages, and not suited for many tasks. He mostly works in finance where mathematical operations performed on on arrays are common. A spreadsheet is the sort of thing you can use that sort of language for: http://nsl.com/papers/spreadsheet.htm

(He commented at one point about "Figuring out how to do it in 17 characters because another developer had used 20..." APL code is terse by intention.)

The fun we used to have in High School using APL on an IBM Selectric (and then eventually a micro-computer, the IBM 5100)

Well, there was an APL type ball for the Selectric that would let you type your programs. Actually running them required the 5100...

(I logged time on Selectrics back when, but did manage to miss the MTSC.)

And yes... I am aware of K

And J as well, I suspect.

Sigh... the 2741 TERMINAL was in effect a Selectric..... The 5100 came at a later time in high school.
