I was taking a quiet walk around the neighborhood when I was swept up in a temporal vortex. I was dropped into the dark ages. Then I pulled my hat from my eyes and it wasn't nearly so dark. I was trapped in a medieval city. If only I'd gotten that book from Amazon.com.

This will go nicely with Life in a Medieval Village and Marriage and Family in the Middle Ages by the same authors and acquired during previous sales. Thanks!

Brave Men and Great Captains by R. Ernest Dupuy and Trevor N Dupuy

Insight into the highlights of American military achievements and failures from the Revolution during the Korean War and from Bunker Hill to Choshin Reservoir

The varying personalities – gifted, heroic, or bumbling – who have led American troops in victory and defeat are brought vividly to life, providing examples of the qualities and techniques that are essential for successful leadership.

This all-encompassing historical study takes in to account the outstanding generals and campaigns of the Revolution, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the Civil War, both World Wars, and Korea.

However, it also brings to life the lesser-known battles of Lundy’s Lane and Chippewa, in addition to assessments of every important American military' leader, from George Washington to William F. Dean.

An U.K. company, Seaforth Publishing, which I gather to be an imprint of the better-known Pen & Sword publishing company, has a huge number of coupon codes pinned on Pinterest. And many of them are very good ones. Here's the URL of the Pinterest webpage where you can find them: www.pinterest.com/pin/521502831826933931.

Seaforth Publishing, appears to produce only titles related to--you guessed it--ocean-related stuff, in particular ships used in the military. Pen & Sword's focus is quite a bit larger, taking in history in general, but largely of military ships.

One enormous caveat: pins with expired coupon codes apparently don't get taken down (this may be a problem with Pinterest and sites similar to Pinterest, I just don't know). This means that you either need to check separately each pin showing a discount code or link to a discount, or if you computer-savvy enough to do this, to search the html source page. If trying the latter, you might try searching for words like "(discount) code," "(book) code," and maybe some others.

Get a free ePub and/or mobi of _Brexit: A Verso Report_, wrtten by the editors of Verso Books.

"Brexit," in case you are not familiar with the term, refers to Britain's exit from the European Union. The book is a little dated, having been published in 2006. However, if I'm not mistaken, the exit is not a _fait a compleat_, and so much of the book's contents still should be timely and relevant.

The book's perspective on the subject will no doubt be extremely left-leaning. A quote from the publisher's website about the series from which this book comes: "A #MeToo reading list featuring classic and contemporary works of feminist analysis and political theory, connecting the dots between gender, sexuality, power and capitalist exploitation."

This book apparently is not marketed through the traditional channels; therefore I have no ratings or reviews of the book to share with you.

By posting this ebook, I do not nessarily agree nor disagree with its contents. I post books which espouse beliefs that I hold and I also post books which espouse beliefs that I don't hold. I post this present book simply for informational purposes, and leave it up to the reader to make up his or her own mind.

Bread and Circuses: Theories of Mass Culture as Social Decay by Patrick Brantlinger

Analyzes theories that have treated mass culture as either a symptom or a cause of social decadence. Discussing many of the most influential and representative theories of mass culture, it ranges widely from Greek and Roman origins, through Marx, Nietzsche, Freud, Ortega y Gasset, T. S. Eliot, and the theorists of the Frankfurt Institute, down to Marshall McLuhan and Daniel Bell.
Brantlinger considers the many versions of negative classicism and shows how the belief in the historical inevitability of social decay—a belief today perpetuated by the mass media themselves—has become the dominant view of mass culture in our time. While not defending mass culture in its present form, Brantlinger argues that the view of culture implicit in negative classicism obscures the question of how the media can best be used to help achieve freedom and enlightenment on a truly democratic basis.

Patrick Brantlinger is James Rudy Professor of English (Emeritus) at Indiana University. He is the author of many books, all from Cornell.

The Birth of Christianity by John Dominic Crossan is $1.99 at Amazon.

From the Amazon blurb:

Quote:
In this long-awaited companion to his landmark The Historical Jesus, John Dominic Crossan, the world's foremost expert on the historical Jesus, explores the lost years of earliest Christianity, those immediately following the execution of Jesus. He establishes the contextual setting by an interdisciplinary combination of anthropological, historical, and archaeological approaches. He identifies the textual sources by a literary analysis of the earliest discernible layers within our present gospels, both inside and outside the New Testament. Context and text come together to challenge long-standing assumptions about the role of Paul and the meaning of resurrection, and to forge an eloquent and powerful new understanding of the birth of the Christian church.
