May I suggest that perhaps we should find out what specifically someone means by "trashy" before jumping to conclusions about it? Someone who talks about "clean romance" might simply mean there is sex in them, and I for one, have absolutely no objections to that.
I do object to romances that brag about being a "CLEAN romance" so I will not waste my time on any of them. I will instead take pride in enjoying what someone with a very different taste in books might refer to as "trashy romance". it's not my fault, or problem, that they don't know better. ![]() EDIT: I take everything back. I read the free Kindle sample of one of the books, and it is trashy. Or rather, it is trash. I think I read better writing in my 9th grade poetry class. I think they made it very clear in their post "trashy" meant sexy not badly written. They then went in to say the books are clean romance which is in the title of each book..
My clean comment was just an annoyance at the author not the poster. The trashy comment was directed at the poster. I find it poor taste to come into a romance thread and insult romances that are sexy. It was not welcomed or needed. I do not read trash. Most of here will agree that they do not either. ![]() (Eyeroll at them, not at you. You and I are in agreement, we're just saying it in different ways.) Genuine romance requires sex. Whether the author chooses to go into explicit details or not is irrelevant, it needs to be there in some form or fashion. Referring to that as trashy is delusional and demeaning, and kind of stupid. |

I don't know if I agree with a romance has to have sex in it. I've read some really good ones without any.
Some of the early regencies do not have any sex at all but kissing is really needed for a HEA. I think kissing is a necessity even if it's at the end of the novel otherwise the romance isn't believable. I do think we are on the same page about the trashy comment. I myself read all kinds of romances to just kisses to really hot. If the hot scenes become just filler sex I skimmed over them but if they are used as a character arc then I will read them. And I accept that talking about a romance book as "trashy" as opposite as "clean" has sounded quite bad for this poor Spanish speaker ![]() Last edited by Terisa de morgan; 06-09-2016 at 12:44 AM. |

I suspect the original use of "trashy" might have been intended to refer to erotic romances, or even erotica. In which case, I still don't think dismissing it as trashy is either respectful or accurate. Filler sex scenes can be very enjoyable to read, if done right. ![]() Intimacy on the other hand does not require physical contact of any form... and is not to be confused with romance. |

I have not read her books now I'm curious. No kissing at all? Is it fade to black or just no signs of affections at all?
Even inspiration romances have holding hands, hugs and yes kisses. Some chaste kisses but some of the more recent published have longer kissing and before marriage. I find that refreshing and realistic. Sent from my XT1528 using Tapatalk |

Like you and some others in this forum, I dislike the use of the words "clean" (used in the titles or descriptions of some books, which implies other romance novels are "dirty") or "trashy" to describe romance novels. Rather, just as I like the way the mystery genre has introduced the term "cozy" to describe the subgenre of "crime fiction in which sex and violence are downplayed or treated humorously, and the crime and detection take place in a small, socially intimate community", I like the way All Romance uses the "heat rating" system to indicate where various romance books lie on the chaste-highly erotic spectrum. On another note, some of the words used to protest the use of "trashy" are as undiplomatic and poorly chosen as the word being protested against. Last edited by Froide; 06-09-2016 at 07:10 AM. |

Some of Elizabeth Lowell's old category romances had scenes hot enough to scorch, and the couple wasn't even touching each other, yet. She could really stoke the heat!
As I recall, the books I am thinking of are Reckless Love, Fire & Rain, Outlaw, Granite Man, Warrior. Another is Sweet Wind, Wild Wind, and I just discovered that BPL has the audio book! Downloading now! Last edited by booklover6; 06-09-2016 at 07:45 AM. |
