Hello,
Thanks to this thread I recently bought a KT2 device (serial starts with 90C6) and managed to successfully jailbreak it following the directions here, I also installed successfully USBNetwork and got ssh remote access working.

Since the last point of the post was that I could update to the latest release and the jailbreak would survive I got back to that after I got everything working but after installing 5.8.2 it looks like the jailbreak is no longer active, I have the KUAL icon on the main menu but clicking it says "The selected application could not be started", if I transfer the update file for KUAL on the USB root I get a message after unmounting the kindle that the update image was invalid for this device.

I initially thought I missed something so I started back from scratch, all went well but when I updated again to 5.8.2 I got the same result.

Is there something to do after I update to restore the jailbreak or is it supposed to not be affected at all ?

Your only problem was putting step #8 in front of step #7.

In this case, the safest course would be to now re-install the 'hotfix' -
It will do no harm even if it isn't required.

Then follow by re-installing all of the add-ins you want to use.
This re-installation of everything is normally required after any Amazon update.

(We only protect the jailbreak and the supporting code from Amazon updates, everything else of ours has to be re-installed.)

I knew it was probably something stupid...
I was really impressed by how easy to install the jailbreak was, there a lot of informations/tools here but this thread helps a lot

I had more trouble finding the right USBNetwork version but I eventually found it, now I can start doing what I really wanted to do with my kindle ^^

hi
my voyage has FW 5.8.1(2974910023).
is installation of doukan possible?
and can i uninstall it later so that its garanty is not voided?

This is a jailbreak thread, not a Duokan thread.

Duokan support should be provided by the commercial entity that stole from our community and violated the GPL by not sharing back. In addition, Duokan is incompatible with our jailbreak and most of our hacks. We do not support Duokan here.

We have hacks like KOReader that replace some of the functionality that you may be looking for in Duokan. This jailbreak thread provides the ability to use our hacks on your device, including KOReader and many others. But not Duokan, unfortunately, because of its failure to follow rules of good conduct (and of law).

Yes.

Although there is no reason to reverse it, Amazon has never refused service or exchange because of it (the JB itself is just a single, small file added to the key store).

Because the "bridge" which makes sure the JB survives, must be set to save specific things. And since each hack is distributed separately and independently, they cannot all be included in the bridge.

I don't know what your background in computer systems is, so the following might be just noise to you.

For the touchscreen based devices:

The Kindles are 'dual boot' devices (two operating systems available) named by their purpose: 'main' and 'diags'.

The flash storage is divided into four partitions (each a file system backing store).

The partitions (and its associated file system) are used for the following:
  1. 'main' operating system
  2. 'diags' operating system
  3. persistent (user) run-time storage (can not be seen by the user)
  4. persistent (user) storage (can be seen by user over USB cable)


Update_*.bin packages are signed, both Amazon's and ours.

What is called a 'jail break' here is simply our signature certificate, which is added to the Kindle's key storage (part of #1) which also holds Amazon's signature certificates.

Since (about) firmware version 5.2, Amazon updates have been a complete image replacement of the contents of the first (#1) partition.

Which means an Amazon image update over-writes the signature certificates. (the actual 'JB' file)

The 'diags' system could be, but never has been, updated OTA.

The other two partitions, containing information both implicitly and explicitly added by the user are not part of the update.
Both for technical and legal reasons (mostly, the contents are not the property of Amazon).

The Kindle's operating system (Linux) executes specific files in a specific order during its IPL (it boot sequence in more modern terms).
Some of those exist in partition #3 (in portions untouched by update process).
When the files that we add to that IPL sequence execute, part of what they do is re-install our signature certificate in the (now) new Amazon image.
That is the 'bridge' code that bridges the certificate across 'main' system image replacement.

None of what we do here, or accept here, is closed source.
Everything is open source, publicly available for inspection and review.
If you need any more of the gory details, "Let the source be with you".

Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Menu -> Reset
Or whatever the path is on your current firmware version.
This is the infamous "Reset (to factory defaults)" menu choice, but in this case it is a requirement, a must use entry.

This is the ONLY TIME you should ever use the "Reset" menu entry in the lifetime of the device.
NEVER AGAIN USE THE "Reset" MENU ENTRY. Never.



Hi,
may I ask why? is using reset somehow dangerous or harmful for the device?
