It's not a legally purchased copy of Windows 7. No, you won't get the free upgrade from Microsoft.

Originally though I seem to remember they did say even illegal copies would be upgraded, as well as WinXP legal or otherwise, but then they changed their minds about it.

Yes you can.
You will have cracked Windows 10.

From what I understand, they will let you upgrade, but they will not legalize your cracked copy.

I don't think it will upgrade unless it is legal.
I believe it asks for a 25 digit key that has to be legal before you can attach to the MS site for any downloads nowadays.

From what I understand, you can upgrade, but your copy will be marked as not genuine. Thus, losing the advantages of having a genuine windows.

And for security reason, I would advice getting a genuine windows. You don't know what changes where made to the cracked copy.

I read that Windows Media Player is going away. I use it to put music on my Sansa Zip player. Will I just have to use drop and drag after?

You read wrongly. Windows Media Centre is going away, not Media Player. They are not the same thing. Which one is it that you use?

Media Center is an application with which you can watch TV (if you've cable connected to your PC, naturally), record shows, watch recorded shows, look at photographs, listen to music, and watch DVD's (and bluerays if you have the right external application installed). All incorporated in one shell, which is easy to use on a TV screen using a remote control (or keyboard/mouse if you have one connected to your pc).

They are still going to be updated just wont become automagically legal. So will have watermarks about being pirated and getting a license etc.

My Win 10 installation as a 2nd OS corrupted my win 7 installation and my htpc just would not boot gave me the kick I needed to try a Linux OS. Was able to get a few windows apps to run with wine a few I couldn't but am able to use those using virtualbox. Maybe I will reinstall my windows 7 in a years time if I want the win10 license. But this htpc is over 5-6 years old and it seems to run better on linux so maybe I will keep the linux.

To slightly correct my previous post, in which I said that Media Player isn't going away in Windows 10, one component of it which is disappearing is the DVD player: Windows 10 won't ship with a DVD video player (although it will still be able to read DVD data discs). If you want to play DVDs on your PC you'll need to install a 3rd-party player in order to do so.

I actually find that decision to be quite curious. Microsoft's rational for removing DVD playback is probably quite sound. Shipping it by default means increased licensing fees. It is probably prohibitively expensive to develop an add-on that will be purchased by a limited number of people. They just want you pay for the codec.
Or get a freeware one.
They did this before and ended up putting them back in.
