Free on Amazon UK - Sins of the Past by Eileen Robertson

'Cynthia Roberts, a former resident of Fawdon, has just returned to her home town to set up her own private investigation agency. At first all seems well in the seemingly picture-perfect town, but it’s not long before Cynthia is over run with clients all claiming to be victims of brutal blackmail. But what connects the victims, other than the fact that they all live in the same place?
As Cynthia investigates, she soon realises that the residents of Fawdon all have dark secrets buried deep within their past. After one of her clients is physically attacked and another is subject to a terrifying case of vandalism, Cynthia realises that she must act fast if she wants to stay one step ahead of this heartless criminal. Tensions reach boiling point and she starts to question whether there’s more than one blackmailer at work.
Can she find the people responsible before the town that she has grown to love is ripped apart by a mass of lies and deceit? But the real question is can we ever truly escape our past? Or will our sins always come back to haunt us? '

Book Description
From the internationally bestselling author of Kane and Abel and A Prisoner of Birth comes Only Time Will Tell, the first in an ambitious new series that tells the story of one family across generations, across oceans, from heartbreak to triumph.

The epic tale of Harry Clifton's life begins in 1920, with the words "I was told that my father was killed in the war." A dock worker in Bristol, Harry never knew his father, but he learns about life on the docks from his uncle, who expects Harry to join him at the shipyard once he's left school. But then an unexpected gift wins him a scholarship to an exclusive boys' school, and his life will never be the same again.

As he enters into adulthood, Harry finally learns how his father really died, but the awful truth only leads him to question, was he even his father? Is he the son of Arthur Clifton, a stevedore who spent his whole life on the docks, or the firstborn son of a scion of West Country society, whose family owns a shipping line?

This introductory novel in Archer's ambitious series The Clifton Chronicles includes a cast of colorful characters and takes us from the ravages of the Great War to the outbreak of the Second World War, when Harry must decide whether to take up a place at Oxford or join the navy and go to war with Hitler's Germany. From the docks of working-class England to the bustling streets of 1940 New York City,
Only Time Will Tell takes readers on a journey through to future volumes, which will bring to life one hundred years of recent history to reveal a family story that neither the reader nor Harry Clifton himself could ever have imagined.

Free on Amazon UK - Bleeding Heart by Mary Rosenblum

'When landscape gardener Rachel O’Connor is offered the job of restoring the gardens of a famous botanist to their original glory, it seems like the perfect job. After all, any plant-lover would love to get their hands on the fading grandeur of the gardens around Eloise Johnston’s home in Portland, Oregon.
As if that were not temptation enough, Eloise offers Rachel a large budget and seems to be in a great hurry for her to take on the job.
But no sooner does she do so, than the aged lady winds up dead in her own creek. An accident? Homicide detective Lieutenant Spiros, on the scene in a flash, certainly doesn’t seem to think so. Soon things take an even darker turn when one of Eloise’s trusted employees finds herself in the frame for murder – although Rachel is certain she is innocent. In true amateur-detective form, Rachel starts digging around not only in her former employer’s gardens, but, much to the concern of her policeman boyfriend Jeff, her life too. Just how did Eloise Johnston die? And how does the death of her daughter, many years before, fit into the picture? '

Well, that's annoying. After posting a few days ago when #2 was free that it was the one book in the series that I didn't have, it seems that I neglected to actually order it . Have to wait for it to come round again...

It's a kind offer, but there's no need. It'll come around again in a few months, and I'm in no hurry.

The first book in Rosemary Martin's (pen name for Rosemary Stevens) Murder-A-Go-Go series, It's A Mod, Mod, Mod, Mod Murder, is now free at Amazon US:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003Z4KB4S

Spoiler:
Quote:
In the era of MAD MEN, there's a lighter side to NYC, one with go-go boots, miniskirts, and murder!

Series description: Wow! Here am I, Bebe Bennett, in New York City in 1964, with my very own apartment, my fun-loving roommate, Darlene--she's a stewardess--and the coolest job a girl could want as a secretary to my dreamy boss, Bradley...I mean, Mr. Williams, vice president of talent for Rip City Records. Checkered cabs, the Peppermint Lounge, London fashions- I want to try it all!

Book One: Now that the Beatles are topping the charts, Bebe's boss has signed up the British group Philip Royal and the Beefeaters for his record label. But when Bebe and Darlene go to the Legends Hotel to meet two members of the band for a fab night out, they find Philip dead--electrocuted with his own guitar. Even worse, the fuzz suspect Darlene and ground her from flying. So, it's up to Bebe to abandon her Jackie Kennedy-inspired suits and venture into the smoky nightclubs of Greenwich Village, delving into the dark side of the swinging city to expose a killer...

"Bebe's charming naivete...her gusto for the singles life, and her considerable intellect make her an unusually appealing sleuth. Add this to the plethora of sixties details, and the result is a clever mystery that's also a trip back to a time when things were groovier." Publisher's Weekly

"Toss a fresh-faced secretary-school graduate (and her flight attendant roomie), a hip British-invasion band, and a hotel room together in the blender that is 1960s New York City, and what do you get? Murder (with the roommate a prime suspect)--and the ensuing undercover investigation. That's what happens in Rosemary Martin's quirky novel..." The New York Post

"A groovy trip back in time." Romantic Times

The other two books in the series, Twist & Shout Murder and Secret Agent Girl, are still $0.99, per this previous post:

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho....php?p=3161083

I've read all three of these and quite enjoyed them. (Also have read a couple of the Beau Brummel mysteries, written as Rosemary Stevens, and liked those too...)

A Murder of Crows is the first in the Ingrid Langley/Patrick Gillard series by Margaret Duffy. It's on US Kindle Countdown at $0.99 for about 3 1/2 more days before going up to $3.99.

The second in this series, Death of a Raven, was free (although not any more) back in October, so it's sort of nice to see the first one on sale, even if not free, since Raven is still in my TBR pile. I'm not totally wedded to having to read a series in order, but it's nice.

link: http://www.amazon.com/Murder-Crows-M...dp/B016AIIFGG/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Her husband was gunned down, and her ex-husband was the only witness. Or was he the murderer?

Famous novelist Ingrid Langley has made a fresh start following her divorce from Patrick Gillard, an SAS-trained killer in Her Majesty’s secret service.

Leaving a turbulent life behind, Ingrid was happy with her second husband, policeman Peter Clyde.

But when Peter is murdered in suspicious circumstances her world is shattered and terrifying feelings resurface.

Instinctively she knows that something is amiss and seeks out the truth, however painful it may be.

But her murdered husband was only a policeman and not an agent so why is the secret service so interested in his death?

When Patrick visits her in the midst of her grief she is furious and confused but cannot bring herself to turn him away.

She sees him for the expert murderer he is but also as a lover and a protector.

Drafts of her new book Moonlake become more cathartic to her than ever before yet her agent Alan and her mother are concerned for her as she gets dragged slowly into a web of spies and secret agencies.

In public, Ingrid and Patrick are the perfect couple, a foil for the real work they are doing.

But will their relationship become more than an act with Peter gone and Ingrid steeped in grief?

Knowing every room she enters could be bugged and sensing she is being watched, Ingrid is not safe.

Is she at risk from Peter’s killers? Does Patrick know more than he is willing to let on?

The IRA, the Russians and British agencies are now a feature of her daily working life and she believes Patrick needs her to help him.

Their trail takes them from training ground to torture to battleground — from London to the moors of Scotland — as they strive to smoke out the high-ranking Russian “mole” responsible for the bobby’s death.

Unfortunately, he’s a ruthless double agent determined to annihilate them first …

A Murder of Crows’ is a thrilling action filled tale of death, sex, love and espionage.

Praise for Margaret Duffy:

"A good mystery is a good mystery, and this is one" Publishers Weekly

"A great read-alike for those who enjoy other hard-boiled husband-and-wife teams, like Dennis Lehane's Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro" Booklist

A Murder Of Crows’, Margaret Duffy’s first novel featuring Patrick and Ingrid, was published by Fawcett. She is the author of numerous best-selling books and has also worked for both the Inland Revenue and the Ministry of Defence. She now divides her time between writing and gardening. ‘Death of a Raven’ and ‘Brass Eagle’ are also published by Endeavour Press.

Oh, THOSE .... I had to re-read some of the comments to remember them. "Half the time I have no idea what's going on in these books. ..... Also, she's a very cryptic writer. She often doesn't tell you what actually happened, she just tells you the consequences, and later on you find out what actually happened."

That cued me in to WHICH book "Death of a Raven" had been. I knew I had just read it, and really liked it. Enough so, that YES, I will go get the first book for actual money. Thanks for posting the link! These are great! I loved that 2nd book. (Raven)
