Hopefully we'll see a windows-based fanless and SSD Hard-drive soon. Sadly, the cost of the OS will add a $100. Netbooks are too small for me.

HP Stream revealed: Microsoft's Chromebook killer is a Chromebook clone
Quote:
Microsoft drove out Linux as the platform of choice during the netbook craze, and now the Windows maker is hoping it can do the same to the latest PC upstart, the Chromebook.

Back in July, Microsoft announced its intention in this regard by showing off the Hewlett-Packard Stream, an upcoming $199 laptop designed to take on the Chromebook. Slightly more expensive laptops around $249 are also due in the coming months from Acer and Toshiba.
HP Stream 14 inch notebook coming soon for $199
Quote:
A few years ago PC makers seemed to be focused on driving up the prices of portable computers by emphasizing premium devices such as thin, light, and powerful ultrabooks priced around $1000 and up. These days it looks like companies are moving in the other direction by launching laptops that are priced competitively with smartphones and tablets.

Microsoft and its partners are promising we’ll see a number of laptops priced at $249 or less this fall. One of them is a the new HP Stream Notebook which is expected to sell for just $199.

Extraordinary to think that in just 10 months of this thread we've gone from pundits trashing the Chromebook concept to actual Chromebooks being used as the benchmark for low end Windows machines.

Windows tablets for $120 are due to arrive very soon. Essentially MS is giving away the OS/Bing.

Server side, with content viewable only in a cloud reading app, maybe.
That's the model here.

BTW, I recently flashed the BIOS on one of our Chromebooks, and installed Linux on it natively. It runs (and updates) much smoother than either Crouton or Chrubuntu.
So it's a "Linuxbook" now. ChromeOS is gone.

My wife's still uses Crouton as needed, and our third is completely stock ChromeOS.

They will probably do it like Amazon's Cloud Reader and have what you're working on cached to your hard drive.

It's going to work on the regular Chrome browser for Windows too.

It has nothing to do with ADE, it's strictly Creative Cloud stuff. I could rant all day about my opinion on it (I don't like it ), but I'm not. To sum it up, I don't think it's appropriate for educational use. Perfectly fine for casual use, but not at $9.99 a month. Don't let Adobe eat up your money just because you refuse to research on alternative products.

Wow!

Quote:
[Chromebooks] are fast approaching a commanding 50 percent share of the edu market, the rest being split between Macs and Windows devices. This is a huge leap on the mere 5 percent Chromebooks had just 18 months ago.

My son just started middle school, and one of his classes is conducted on Chromebooks. It was the first I'd heard about Chromebooks in education in my town.
