I know I have good backups of my major files.

It's just the pain of reinstalling everything. I now how, it's just so freaking time consuming. Time that should be spent book shopping or reading

Good for you. You've just put yourself into the 5% of computer users who actually makes any data back-up at all.

One thing you might want to backup is your bookmarks if you use Firefox FEBE backup will do that with your extensions. There is a program that backups Chrome and it works with IE.

Things people forget to back up.

Mail Folders
Mail Settings
Favorites (Bookmarks)
Extensions
Documents
Pictures
Downloads
Music
Desktop
Calibre Settings folder
Public Folder stuff

I do weekly backups of these to my external drives.

My Calibre folder is on a external drive so I never have to worry about it and I have it back up in three other places.

If you use Firefox, just set up Sync. Then sync after reinstall, and everything is there.

If it will start in safe mode you should still be able to retrieve your pictures and bookmarks. I hate having to start over it's so time consuming and a pia to get the settings back to how you like them. *goodluck*

I prefer the FEBE extension. Sync sometimes loses stuff and puts it in odd places. FEBE will backup bookmarks, profiles, extensions and give you a list of everything with links. It also restores cookies and passwords and form data I never worry about losing anything in FF using this plugin. It even puts back my bookmark toolbar in the order I like.

Yeah I am sending some stuff like my favorites folder to my USB and I uploaded some other stuff to Box (Dropbox told it was full so I couldn't add anything there).

Is FEBE something I can use in safe mode? Where do I find it?

I know how/where to back up my AOL mail.

I think Yahoo, Gmail, and Comcast are cloud based. Are there folders I should backup for them?

It's been a few years (over 5) since I've had to do any of this. And I didn't have Dropbox, Box, or Copy then. Or many USB drives for that matter

There would only be something to backup if you download your email from them to an email client on your PC. For example I use Gmail for much of my email, but also download it via POP to Windows Mail (leaving a copy on the Gmail servers) so that I have a backup in case anything happens to Gmail.

Ok, stupid question. Blossom, you say to back up the calibre settings folder. What is that?

As of now, I back up my calibre folder, which has all the sub folders with all the files and I guess meta in it. I back it up to my amazon cloud drive.
But is there something else with calibre I need to back up? Or is that enough for it to know what plug ins I have used and such.

I am so glad we have cloud storage now. Unlike in recent years when my computer crashed, usually dead hard drive, I tried to put stuff on DVD's from time to time. Cloud is much easier.

It's any/all settings you've configured in Calibre...

The cloud is great, but it's not a bad idea to also keep a local backup (DVD, USB stick, external hard drive).

Ooh, I need to look into how to this after I get everything straightened out. But for now I guess I don't have anything on my PC for them.

I never started out to have so many email addresses, but I added Yahoo years back, Comcast came with the new cable company when I moved, and my android phone made me get Gmail for apps.

As my brother who runs the IT department at a CU often tells me, your computer may crash, your USB stick may malfunction, and the cloud may rain, but the odds of them all doing so at the same time are slim. Hence the need for multiple backups. If one fails, you have another.
