https://www.rakuten.com/
(Kobo’s parent, btw) I couldn’t find any fine print on if the 5% discount also applies to ereaders; I know it applies to Kobo ebooks. But it couldn’t hurt to sign in through Rakuten, so long as the 5% wasn’t the dealbreaker. And, please, could we discuss deals in the Deals forum? It’s more helpful to everyone when deals and discussions are in one place. |

Does the Sage work with the buttons on either side? IOW, can you rotate 180 degrees to switch hands?

Yes. Switch from right hand to left hand by rotating the reader 180° and the buttons still use the lower button to page forward and the upper to page back unless you changed this in the settings.

Joined the ranks of Sage owners yesterday.
So far I'm enjoying it. I'd hoped dark mode would be easier on my eyes for night reading, but I'm not sure that it is. I had to go through ALL device fonts to find one that was workable (Amasis), even then, I used advanced settings to take ALL weight off and still had to enlarge font size about 3-4 clicks more than my usual. So, not counting on it as a major aid to night reading. But if dark mode isn't workable for me, the bit of extra screen contrast is helpful at night. I love the new screen and the snappier performance. Ergonomics are not quite as good as Forma, but Sage is not a problem for me to hold either. Battery seems not too bad, but then I don't exactly have high expectations. No e-ink reader I've owned has ever lasted more than a week of MY reading habits. ![]() The device in its official light green magnetic sleep cover is absolutely GORGEOUS! |

Just tried it and the code for 10% works on the device but not the sleep cover. As much as I want buttons I didn't buy. I'm buying a Bolt and that's more than enough spending at the moment.

Historically mono CRTs did dark mode because focus was better. So many terminal applications on GUI systems kept it out of tradition.
Modern Dark Mode wasn't to read in the dark but to save power on OLED phones. I only read with a small angle-poise lamp at night. I tried dark mode with and without front light. I think it's a personal preference and people used to white text on black may prefer it, but personally I was delighted in early 1990s to forget DOS & CP/M. I think also some people use laptops & monitors in areas with too high ambient light or with Contrast & Brightness too high (typically defaults). My Contrast is 18 & brightness 26 (out of 100) on monitor and Laptop Brightess setting at less 1/3rd, so the white page isn't too bright. I'm used to reading books on paper with black text, so I imagine that's why I like the black text on eink. I've loads of old books with yellowed or faded paper and if the light is bright enough for them I don't need the eink front light. |

I never read with lighter text on darker background either. Just can't. In a dim room I use low brightness combined with the warm light on all my devices - computers, phones and ereaders. I never use any device in total darkness.

I read on the Sage primarily in dark mode, as I usually read at night before bed. My partner is light sensitive, so even at low brightness (7-10), the light is disturbing. The only time I don’t have it in dark mode is when I read during the day.
After I reverted to a Voyage after trying an Oasis, I discovered that I preferred dark mode (which the Voyage does not support). It was one of my reasons for buying the Sage. |

I prefer white on black it’s why I got a Sage. It’s easier for me to read on, especially when reading on a train or car at night.

I got the low battery warning on Sage this AM, so I put it on to charge. But for these first few battery cycles, should I let it go to the battery warning or until it shuts down?
One thing I've really noticed on the Sage is that ghosting seems virtually non-existent! Loving that! I prefer black on white text for the majority of my reading, but I do have trouble with light screens in a dark room. I can't deal with my computer at night any more for instance, though once upon a time, it was no problem. I did a little dark mode reading last night, but I made the font bigger still and that went better. It helped that I had a book that I could choose left alignment on, my previous book (library) was not adjustable in that regard. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

I'm not buying anything without a light sensor, looks like Kobo has given up on that.

I only have experienced a light sensor on the Kindle Paperwhite SE, and it works poorly. When it's bright, it turns up the brightness. When I am in a shadow or dim area, it turns the brightness down so low as to be useless. I manually adjust it.
