I've read pieces of Hanzai Japan - I leapt at the Rozan story and kind of browsed my way out from there. Like most anthologies, you win some, you lose some. I haven't read Taiyo Fujii's Gene Mapper, sigh - I picked that one up a while ago, after hearing good things and reading the author's short work, and then I got distracted. |

https://www.amazon.com/Bishops-Heir-.../dp/B01AYTUPYW https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/eb...-bishop-s-heir A powerful cleric plots the ultimate treason against a medieval realm’s young king in Katherine Kurtz’s breathtaking return to the fantasy world of the Deryni For centuries, a powerful faction of the Holy Church in Gwynedd has been at war with the Deryni, the mysterious race whose magic is despised and feared by those who lack their remarkable arcane abilities. The bloodshed ended with the coronation of the popular young King Kelson Haldane, himself a possessor of Deryni magic—but the peace is short-lived. Dark rumblings of secession are coming from northern Meara as support strengthens for Caitrin Quinnell, the cunning and ruthless pretender queen. But an even greater threat is emerging from the shadows of orthodoxy. The treacherous Edmund Loris, onetime Archbishop of Valoret and the Deryni’s most virulent foe, has escaped from confinement—and, with a cabal of like-minded conspirators, is preparing to undertake an act of blackest treason: the craven murder of Gwynedd’s rightful liege. |

Orbit has put Hugo Award nominees Ancillary Mercy by Ann Leckie and The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin on sale for $4.99 at all the major ebook retailers (half price). They only provided PDF excerpts for the Hugo packet.

X-link to the DRM-free thread for a new StoryBundle:

The Historical Fantasy Bundle is curated by John W. Campbell Award-winning author Melissa Scott, and includes not only her own backlist work, but also that of Judith Tarr (2 Ancient Egypt & Persia w/Alexander the Great novels published by Tor), Martha Wells (1 HarperCollins Eos novel and a collection of short stories set in that world), SCA historical recreationist Heather Rose Jones (1 recent BenBella novel), Jo Graham (Orbit-published author; her novels in this are from small presses), and more. This is excellent value for money if you like historical fantasy, and these are authors whom I've mostly read in some form or other and would recommend. |

And anecdotally, I've heard that Tarr's older Ancient/Classical world books are considered some of her best earlier work, as is Martha Wells' Ile-Rien series, by people who've read more of their back catalogue than I have. I hope you enjoy them! |

Today's Kindle Daily Deal in the UK is four of the Witcher books by Andrzej Sapkowski for £1.99 each.

It's books 2 and 3, plus the two collections, oddly, but I think book 1 was in the recent "start a series" sale. |

Court of Fives by Kate Elliott (Court of Fives Book 1) is currently $2.99 in the US.

It's her first YA novel but since she is a popular fantasy writer and this book is also fantasy it may interest some here. https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/ebook/court-of-fives Jessamy's life is a balance between acting like an upper-class Patron and dreaming of the freedom of the Commoners. But away from her family she can be whoever she wants when she sneaks out to train for The Fives, an intricate, multilevel athletic competition that offers a chance for glory to the kingdom's best contenders. Then Jes meets Kalliarkos, and an unlikely friendship between two Fives competitors--one of mixed race and the other a Patron boy--causes heads to turn. When Kal's powerful, scheming uncle tears Jes's family apart, she'll have to test her new friend's loyalty and risk the vengeance of a royal clan to save her mother and sisters from certain death. A second YA fantasy novel also discounted is Circle of Magic #01: Sandry's Book by Tamora Pierce which is $1.99 in the US https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/eb...-sandry-s-book Four elements of power, four mages-in-training learning to control them. In Book 1 of the Circle of Magic Quartet, gifted young weaver Sandry is brought to the Winding Circle community. There she meets Briar, a former thief with a way with plants; Daja, an outcase gifted at metalcraft; and Tris, whose connection with the weather unsettles everyone, including herself. The four misfits are taught how to use their magic, but when disaster strikes, it's up to Sandry to weave together four different kinds of power to save herself, her friends, and Winding Circle. |

Macmillan's eDeals page has Earth Unaware, the first book in the First Formic War series by Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston for $2.99 at US / Canada / New Zealand retailers. (Not Australia though, probably because Hachette have exclusive rights there.)

(As seems to be the way with these Macmillan specials now, the New Zealand price ranges from $US2.99 to $NZ2.99, with the cheapest being Apple at $NZ2.99.) |

I've just noticed that there's a whole heap of older Dean Koontz novels going cheap at Amazon UK. A lot of them are probably more properly supernatural/horror or supernatural/sci-fi crossbreeds, but I'm afraid I'm a bit pushed for time to look them all up.
