I'm currently in the process of reading a couple of Fictionwise novels I continue to buy.
Right now, I'm reading Predator or Prey? by Scott Harper. It's only "so-so" at the moment (I'm one-half through the book); but, there's something beyond this novel that attracts me -- it's hard to explain what attracts me to all these Multiformat novels I buy from their site, but I'll try: I suppose I like the idea that I can read some very interesting stories and novels that are somewhat inexpensive and by relative newcomers. For me, there's something inherently exciting about reading books by relative unknowns. Or perhaps a better way of saying this is that it's exciting to read writers who are known within the ebook community, but unknown outside of the market of traditional paper publishing. So, while the novel I'm reading is only "so-so," I'm excited about reading it. I can almost see the author flexing himself, reaching out, and growing. Don |

Just finishing "From the Borderlands, stories of terror and Madness" Edited by Elizabeth and Thomas F Monteleone. With stories by Bentley Little, Whitley Strieber, John Farris david J. Schow, and a new novella by Stephen King. (Stationary Bike, Daffy!)
Groan. A small, tightly bound paperback. Not available on Kindle. Boy, am I spoiled. No way to hold with one hand, my fingers were screaming. Type small. The stories are disturbing. With one exception..........Rami Temporalis, by Gary Braunbeck. Outstanding, haunting. What if you had part of the face of God? |

I'm reading another Anna Katharine Green mystery from the Internet Archive. (I'm actually reformatting and converting the scan, but reading it as I go.)

I'm just finishing David Gemmell's first book in the Troy series and what an enjoyable read. I saw the books in the Grocery store paperbacks and thought it was just someone capitalizing off of the movie but then I saw who the author was. When I got home I checked Fictionwise and sure enough all three books were out as e-books.
I don't know how I missed it when it first came out. |

The Count of Monte Cristo. It's seeming very loooonnnng (probably because I feel like I know the story and just want him to get on with it).

I own the Sony PRS-505 (and love it). I'll keep an eye out for that title if/when it becomes available as an ebook in my format. Thanks for letting us know about it. Don |

Finished The Gathering Storm, Crown of Stars 5, by Kate Elliott.
Quite good read. Books 4 and 5 are a lot better than 1-3. Two more to go. Now reading Hard to Be a God by Strugatsky brothers. I read the book some 20 years ago, remember nothing. I don't really understand how much I understood back then and how the book was allowed to be published in the former USSR. |

Hi All,
Here's my update... Finished reading _A Touch of Evil_ and _The Time Cavern_. Both were pretty good reads. Evil was a little slow in places but ok. However, I just have no inkling to read any more in the series. _The Time Cavern_ was very good considering it was targeted toward a young reader. It really has you thinking about all the problems with time travel. I will give Evil 3 of 5 stars and Cavern 4 of 5. I will certainly get the sequel to Time Cavern when it is out. BTW: Time Cavern is the first Kindle book I've bought from Amazon. With so many free books in my library from TOR and others I just don't see a reason to buy any books right now. Currently reading _In the Bleak Midwinter_... yes another freebe as you can tell. Starting out OK but not much of a page turner yet. I hope the action notches up a bit. BOb Books I read in June Books I read in July Books I read in August |

Just finished reading Gale Force by Rachel Caine (fantasy novel.. very good series btw). I just started reading The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky (preparing for my September lit discussion). I am quite surpised, as this seems to be a good book as well. I remember reading Dostoevsky in college, and I wasn't too thrilled. I guess age refines ones tastes

I agree, there were sections which it seemed to drag out. However, I did not have the handicap of being familiar with the story. So I was captivated through most of the book. |

Without a doubt, the very best book that I have read this month was Little Brother by Cory Doctorow. Doctorow suggests that downloaders can help him financially by buying the paper copy—either for yourself or donating a copy to a classroom. I'm going to make sure that there's a copy of this book in as many nearby libraries as I can. In some cases, it's going to require me to talk with the librarians and try to convince them not to put a donated copy into the library book sale/fund raiser. As soon as the book comes out in paperback, I'm going to work with a Civics or Government teacher in the local high school to try and get the book into the curriculum—with copies for the classroom. Little Brother, along with 1984, sets the stage for discussing the abuse of power (whether sanctioned by the "government" itself or simply by officials or organizations) and the risks of losing privacy and freedoms in a post-9/11 world. I'm currently deeply engaged in The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch, The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, Earth Has No Sorrow by Michelle Blake, and High Noon by Nora Roberts. I've dabbled in about six other books and acquired at least another six new books via purchase or trade. I expect to finish at least one of these books by tomorrow night, taking me to 15 books for August and 96 YTD. Quote:

![]() Also, Caine's website is pretty cool. She posts some extra short stories to the actual books themselves. Almost like a director's cut on a dvd for books. Some member's of my fantasy forum found this a dull series, and acutally steered me away before I started reading them. The first one is Ill Wind.. If you get around to reading them, drop me a line and tell me what you thought . |
