Trying not to freak out. I live in a small town in Illinois - some of you know where. Most of you also know I work in the only chain "supermarket" in town. I meet nearly everyone in town sooner or later, if I don't know them by name, I know them by sight. One of my regular customers got murdered today. This is a small town, stuff like this isn't supposed to happen here! The going theory of the police (according to the local paper's website) is that she walked in on a home invasion in progress (in broad daylight, mind you). As far as has been published, they have no leads as to who might have done this. I'm in shock. There is NO WAY I'm coming home to an empty house next week when I work, unless they catch someone by then...if Chris is working overtime, I'll just go straight from the store to pick him up and sit there half an hour longer.

wow, shel, that is really upsetting news. i'd be freaked out too. i hope they catch whoever did that quickly.

Oh, no, shel!! How terrifying! I hope they are able to catch whom ever is responsible quickly.

You are probably safer not going home but I think I would hang out at work and read where there are lots of people. That way I wouldn't be waiting by myself in a car.

Do you have mace/pepper spray and one of those loud noise things?

I can't hang out at the store, that would be an even emptier parking lot. I get off at midnight, which is when the store closes. When Chris works overtime he gets off at 1 a.m. At least out at Chris's job it's a fenced in lot, and it's slightly out of town, which makes the probability of someone randomly choosing to pull in there less. I do have pepper spray, Chris insisted I get it when I started working this shift.

I'm still freaked, and I still don't have any more news about the police catching someone, or even having any ideas about catching someone. I don't know if they have leads they aren't telling the press (which I find pretty likely, our police here are pretty good), or whether for once they really don't have anything to go on. The latter possibility scares me silly.

Why not find a friend to go have coffee or something until it was time to get Chris? Or go hang out at a late night coffee/food place where there are people until time to go?

Alarm system in place yet?

How scary for a small community.

Shel, I feel for you and your community. Things like that happen everywhere, yet we think it will not happen whereever HERE is. Our city is of medium size and that stuff still happens here as well... Northern Illinois. Be aware but try to rest easy, too.

I just bought a Sony 505 for my husband. I have it all set up with over 80 books he will most likely enjoy.... but, I am not at all certain I can wait until his birthday to give it to him! So, what I am doing is wondering what to do... now or later.
