I'd say so. I've read the entire series; by the time this one came along, it was losing steam. The earlier titles are much better.

I've quite enjoyed the whole Matt Cobb series, and was lucky enough to pick them all up back when a Kobo coupon could both (1) be found easily or gotten via a contest, and (2) often be used on your choice of couponable books, not just some from a list!

Anyway, I recently went to work for our family business, and got to pick my own title for my weird ill-defined role and I picked "Special Projects" with this series in mind <g>.

The Doublet Affair is the second in the Ursula Blanchard series by Fiona Buckley. It has dropped to $3.99 at Kindle US. This is about the upper limit at which I consider a backlist genre book to be on sale, but this is one of my top ten favorite mystery series, so I thought I'd post it anyway. Unfortunately the first in series, To Shield the Queen, is sitting at a ridiculous (IMO, for backlist titles) $8.99 so if you like to read in order, that's not going to work too well here. In any case, for this one...

link: https://www.amazon.com/Doublet-Affai.../dp/B00BOTY2KA

Spoiler:
Quote:
Ursula Blanchard is "audacious, intensely loyal, and beguiling," said Publishers Weekly of Fiona Buckley's historical sleuth in her mystery series debut. Now, the young, widowed lady-in-waiting is back, once again defending her mistress, Queen Elizabeth I -- this time from a plot to overthrow the Queen and usurp her throne, a task that will test Ursula's sharp wits and investigative skills to the limits.

Torn between her duties and her personal life, Ursula has asked permission from the Queen to leave the court for a time. But Queen Elizabeth will only grant that request if Ursula will first assist Sir William Cecil in his investigation of a troubling plot against Elizabeth -- one that could place her cousin, Mary, Queen of Scots, on the throne of England.

Ursula's role will test her sharp eyes and cunning wiles. Already, one of Cecil's most trusted spies is dead. As Ursula follows directions and joins the household of her old friends Ann and Leonard Mason -- now under suspicion of involvement in this Catholic plot -- Ursula knows her own life may depend on her abilities to discover the truth in a dangerous web of deceit.

This Thing of Darkness is the fourth in the Fiona Griffiths series by Harry Bingham. It is a US Kindle Countdown deal at $0.99 for about 5 1/2 more days.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Thing-Darknes.../dp/B00ZZVDCP4

Spoiler:
Quote:
A hanged man, a stolen painting, an impossible crime

A marine engineer is found hanged in a locked apartment. Some artwork is stolen, then mysteriously returned. A security guard is found dead at the base of a Welsh cliff.

When Fiona Griffiths is tasked to look through a stackload of cold cases, her bosses don't expect her to find anything of interest. But then she finds that an impossible robbery really happened. That a nailed-on suicide was anything but. That the dead security guard was almost certainly murdered.

Before long, Fiona is embroiled in what will become the toughest case of her career so far - one that forces her to enter the heart of darkness, and a journey that will test her mental toughness to its very limits.

This international smash hit murder mystery series is ideal for fans of Stieg Larsson, Gillian Flynn, Tana French ... and for anyone at all who loves their crime noir and their female protagonists strong, brave and smart.

Shelter From The Storm: A Hard-Boiled New Orleans Legal Thriller (Tubby Dubonnet Mystery #4) (The Tubby Dubonnet Series) by Tony Dunbar

Reprint from 1997

To out-of-town kingpin Willie LaRue, Mardi Gras seems the perfect time for a New Orleans heist - nobody, but nobody will be thinking about a single other thing. Parties, parades, chaos, alcohol - who could be concerned about a little thing like a bank job? Indeed, all might have gone well except for an out-of-season frog-flogger that threatens to flood the French Quarter - something even Hurricane Katrina couldn't do.

Book 4 of 8 in The Tubby Dubonnet Series (8 Book Series)

The Frumious Bandersnatch is the 53rd (although this depends a bit on who's counting and how they count) in the 87th Precinct series by Ed McBain. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US, no idea why or for how long.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Frumious-Band.../dp/B000FC0Y8Q

Spoiler:
Quote:
It should have been the night that launched a new pop idol. Tamar Valparaiso is young and beautiful, with the body and voice of an angel, and the stage is set for her to launch her debut album, Bandersnatch, on a luxury yacht in the heart of the city. But halfway through her performance, while the partygoers look on helplessly, masked men drag Tamar off the stage and into a waiting speedboat.

Detective Steve Carella is just showing up for the graveyard shift when news of the kidnapping comes in. Working disjointedly with a Joint Task Force that calls itself "The Squad," Carella and the men and women of the Eight-Seven must find Tamar before time -- or indeed her very life -- runs out.
In this brilliant look at the music industry, Ed McBain once again combines his mastery of the form with the fast-paced dialogue and intricate plotting that have become his signature.

I don't know if this counts as a bargain, but it's under 5 (3.99). John Levitt (I'm a big fan of his urban fantasy series, Dog Days) is publishing his thriller backlist (finally). They are regular mysteries/thrillers (no fantasy elements). I have them both in hardback from way back when.

I don't know when Carnivores will be out. I assume soon. He wrote these before writing the dog days series.
