I'm doing my Booker long list read before they announce the short list in early September. So my brain is exhausted, but so far I've read: The Lost Dog by Michelle de Kretser - Really didn't like it at all A Fraction of the Whole by Steve Toltz - loved it, it had some absolutely wonderful lines - in some ways his observations remind me of Pratchett, except in a non-fantasy world. The Enchantress of Florence by Salman Rushdie - Absolutely beautiful language, with some lines about orphans and children and fairy tales that were magic. But doesn't hold up throughout. Currently reading: A Case of Exploding Mangoes by Mohammed Hanif - the best thing about this by far is the title, but I'm still very interested. After I finish this, it's time for a little bit of a break and I'm torn between some epic fantasy or some nonfiction. |

"Promise of the Wolves" by Dorothy Hearst. Since I'm a dog person, I'm interested in theories about wolves/dogs and humans co-evolving by supporting each other. Love this book so far, and I'm not even much of a fantasy fan. Lelah |

I'm very fond of the "urban fantasy" genre, although vampires are my least favorite of the "characters" found there. Unfortunately I seem to have read my way through most of the books available at this point - or at least the ones that can't be shelved in "romance" as well. One of my favorites is Kelley Armstrong, although vampires are not the good guys there.

Just finished Patricia Briggs' Cry Wolf (paper, on loan from a friend). Same universe as her Mercedes Thompson series, but different characters. I thought it was pretty good-- a bit "romancy" for my tastes, but still some pretty good character and plot development. I kept thinking that it was the second book in a series, because of references back to what had happened before the book started (though I think I wouldn't have wanted to read the first book, which is perhaps why the author didn't write it). Good if you like werewolves. If you're more into vampires, try the Mercy Thompson books. If you prefer urban fantasy without vampires, of course, you could hardly go wrong with Charles de Lint. |
