Two SF novels by a UK author and with some good reviews – what to do with them? Leave them unloved on a quiet corner shelf where no-one looks, or try a new tack?

Prices, prices! How can anyone arrive at an appropriate price for a piece of writing? Well, according to many sources, there are people who won’t even give a first glance, never mind a second, to an indie book priced at 99 cents because it automatically must be awful. So, to keep happy those and other people who value a quality product and believe it should be priced accordingly, my two 100,000+ word novels are to be priced more ‘realistically’.

Varying discounting occurs through other distributors via smashwords, so the notional rrp for the smashwords versions of

Passengers to Sentience
and
Passengers to Zeta Nine

has been raised to $3.50 on the understanding that they will ultimately be discounted further down the chain. When pricing vs discount has eventually reached equilibrium, the price at the Amazon Kindle store will increase from 99 cents to $2.99.

Meanwhile, and prior to achievement of the blissful equilibrated state, a discount will be offered at smashwords. Hence, while the price at the Amazon Kindle store remains at the absurdly low 99 cents (74 pence or less in the UK), the discount via the two incredibly secret codes written in almost invisible ink below, will permit purchase at the unbelievably low price of 99 cents:

Passengers to Sentience secret 99 cent code UL27V
Passengers to Zeta Nine secret 99 cent code BG35X

If little of the above makes much sense, that is in large part a result of my having scant knowledge of economic principles and the science of pricing.

However, all you actually need to know is:
smashwords
secret codes
99 cents

If anyone out there still reads books made from dead trees, the Amazon discount on the paperback version of Passengers to Sentience is running at an incredible 57%, giving a bargain price of only $6.46.

OK, I've just bought them from Amazon at the absurdly low prices of £0.69 and £0.74. Now as to when I'll get around to reading them...

Passengers to Sentience
Passengers to Zeta Nine

I think a little work on the cover could do you some good. The images are OK, even if the Earth is a little wobbley at the edges. But the plain backgrounds and dull type leave a lot to be desired.

Compare to Vicki Tyley's rather splendid cover for Thin Blood.

My ebook is on Kindle at Amazon
Its about a cop who, after being shot in a cemetery, encounters ghosts and people with paranormal type problems. He wants to help them all, but quickly learns that he can't, though he tries anyway.

There's 9 stories in 130 pages for 99 cents
I am in fact working on a new novella of at least 100 pages, starring the same character, and I hope to release by the end of November and then 4 more novellas in 2011

I almost feel dirty doing this...

I celebration of the incoming K3 I went around and hacked the eBook price of "Tree of Life" down from the old $8.90 to a far more socially acceptable under $5 price.

High-fantasy with a strong late 1800's writing style.

It's a story about a human mage who seeks to 'deal with' the mortality imbalance between humans and elves.

Video trailer at - http://treeoflifethebook.com
Read more about the author and also get the book at - http://elitadaniels.com

Available in ePub, Mobi and PDF - no DRM

You guys are just the best! I’m very grateful for your eagle-eyed assessments.

Firstly, GeoffC, thank you for testing the links. I’ve been back and changed them and they now seem to work. Please let me know again if you find they don’t.

Yes, pdurrant, it was partly the opening of the UK branch of the Amazon Kindle store that made me realise just how little 99 cents was, when translated into GBP – about the price of a bar of chocolate – and my books will last you a bit longer!

Vicki Tyley's cover is indeed very attractive, as, of course, is yours – one that I am sure is much admired.

On the subject of my covers – one of my daughters (the one with the degree in Fine Art) drew the image for the cover of Passengers to Sentience – the creature depicted needed to have skin like a cuttlefish. Cuttlefish don’t feature in the story but some of the characters in the story have skin which they can change in colour and pattern at will, rather like cuttlefish. I hesitate to say more as it is meant to be a bit of a mystery thriller type of SF story.

The Passengers to Zeta Nine cover was (in the case of Art Daughter being in Peru for eleven weeks) done by me :-) processing a digital photograph of a rather nice piece of Maltese glass through a sequence of operations in an image manipulation program. If the image was meant to be the earth, perhaps it could be forgiven for being a little wobbly, as I understand the earth does indeed wobble on its axis (OK, I know that’s not what you meant). However, the image is intended to be planet Zeta Nine of the title – a place where the pioneers get more than they bargained for.

I am very grateful for your ideas on the backgrounds and type face. Honest comment is a valuable thing indeed and I shall be looking into different fonts, layouts and backgrounds after the weekend.

Thank you for your support and for buying my books.

Given Amazon's current royalty structure, $2.99 seems the price that an author should be charging for an ebook, so that you can get the 70% rate.

Hopefully they'll extend the 70% rate to the UK store before too long.

RED ASPHALT
A Novel by Scott Cherney

See that car in your rear-view mirror?
The driver wants to kill you.
Don’t take it personally.
You just happen to be in the way.

Calvin Wheeler is an American dreamer in a triple threat cage match with his two biggest adversaries-everyday life and himself. His marriage to the woman he believed to be his soul mate is rapidly evaporating before his eyes. The book he's been working on for over a decade is slipping through his fingers as he struggles to complete it. As these pressures grow, Calvin compensates by conjuring up outrageous road rage scenarios in the multiplex of his mind. To make matters even worse, he drives for a living. As his life, job and dreams simultaneously implode, his wild fantasies begin to literally bleed over into reality. Now with a gun in one hand and a steering wheel in the other, this distant runner-up in the human race feels empowered for the very first time. At least our boy's finally found a purpose in life.
RED ASPHALT tells a violent, tragic tale with darkly humorous touches and pointed social commentary. And the moral to the story? Traffic can be murder. . .

"RED ASPHALT is a joyride to read. Buckle up!"-Shannon Yarbrough

"RED ASPHALT is witty, edgy and downright relentless!"-Tom Amo, author AN APPLE FOR ZOE

"RED ASPHALT is the best novel I've ever written!"-Scott Cherney, author, RED ASPHALT

RED ASPHALT is available for $2.99 at the Kindle store
and other formats at my storefront

RED ASPHALT by Scott Cherney
WARNING! NOT TO BE READ WHILE DRIVING A BUS!

There you go...shameless or just plain verbose?
You decide!
