The no-brainer feature for me for buying this device, is the fact of allowing to take notes besides an open document and immediately allow you to quickly zoom in an area, not necessarily using circles to highlight them, but instead using straight lines, like in the video. My main use case, so delightful, my super WOW for this device :-)

Can anyone test if you can change the sides of the side-by-side document mode?

I confirm that you can do it. There is a menu item called "Swap Screens" which enables you to do that.

So, as I mentioned at one point, I use the RP1 to track ToDo lists for different areas of my life, including: my programming work, study of the classical guitar, exercise, etc.

Well, here is an article that shows Leonardo Da Vinci's ToDo list from 1490:

I am looking for a screen protector which could possibly save the wearing out of the pen tips to some extent. Wondering if this be any helpful:

It probably would, but not by much.

The problem is the tips being made of Polyoxymethylene (POM), instead of nylon. POM has a better electrical conductivity, but is very soft.

That Sony sells them for $2 per tip is pure theft, especially considering the manufacturing costs and the fact that I need to import them over to Europe.

You could experiment with sanding down nylon string (€0,15 per metre retail) and see if the conductivity is high enough.

If not, you could try 3D Filament made of POM or order a batch of tips from a local POM wire manufacturer. That would be slightly more expensive, but nowhere near $2 per tip rip-off prices.

From your reply it sounds as if the pen's tech depended on the tip being electrically conducting. Is that true? Why would that be necessary - I presumed they're using Wacom technology again. If conductivity is involved, a screen protector may interfere with the process aswell, couldn't it?

PS: I assume Sony has made this choice for a material based upon the idea that replacing the tip may not be as annoying as having the screen wear down, since latter can not be replaced. If you indeed should go for the harder tips I think you really need an additional screen protector, lest the screen be damaged.

@Harry: Those are the 'hard' tips. The soft ones are made of felt

Touchscreens work by either completing or ending a current flow through the touch of your finger/stylus.

A thin film of plastic isn't resistive enough to start interfering. But again, I don't know what technology the RP-1 uses.

It's entirely possible that they picked POM to lessen scratches on the screen (i've read about Wacom screens superficially scratching because of the Nylon tips), but the astronomical price of the replacement tips and the S-1 tips being Nylon, makes me feel of something more malicious with the RP-1

Especially since I never heard of people complaining about Wacom styli and their hardness.

Unless they are specially treated to be conducting, most plastics are so resistive they stop all current. That is, they are insulators.

My replacement RP1 arrived and is working. Thx to B&H, perfect service!
I had a connection problem (the Paper App didn't find the device) and removed the complete Sony software including the two driver packages. After the reinstall everything worked again.

Hello to everyone,

It's 2 days since I received my device in EU. B&H shipped faster than promised, 3 days since payment.

Pluses:
My first 13.3 inch ereader, finally I can read PDFs properly. This is the best feature. I know it's not exclusive but, as people describe it here, it's the fastest for PDFs. Don't have a reference so they must be right.
Ultralight, ultraslim and sleek, but not without some issues.
Touch and stylus, that's a confortable combo.
Excellent resolution.
Stylus highlight button very handy.

Minuses:
Visible capacitive wire mesh on the screen. Honestly initially I thought it's a faulty copy. But it turns out it's a feature, not a bug. Soon we'll walk on Mars, but there are no transparent conductive materias invented yet..?
IMO this mesh reduces the whiteness of the background by at least 15-20%, and thus the perceived contrast as well.
The device is looking overall very nice, but for e-book standards, not mainstream tablets/phones. The edges of the top screen are a bit wavy in certain places, probably due to the gluing.
There is a larger space btw the edge of screen an the rim of the back case. Basically I can see the USB port between them from a certain angle.
All these make it look a bit fragile.
The stylus is a bit of a hit and miss when toggling between writing and highlighting, I have to push for highlight keeping the pen away from the screen, otherwise it will not switch. Also, the writing code is first leaving the pen trail in a raw (unrendered/jagged) mode, then if no writing happens for 1-2 secs, then it processes that latest written sequence to its finishes smooth version, with a refresh blink. Understandable why, but a bit distracting at first.
Software wise, I don't mind the restrictions except the possibility to conect to phones, for doc uploads that would really help me. But I see why others are sensitive to the stripped down feats.

Hope it will last me, it's deffo not a cheap product.
