Don't mount the image. You will get the same sort of error as mounting the card. Unpack the file and write the img file inside to the card. Then put it back in the device.

For getting book on the device, you can use the browser. It can download book and they will be added to the library. It isn't a great way to get a lot of books onto the device, but it works for a few books at a time.

Hello again David, thank you again for all your help. I did as you said and have the Kobo starting until the setup of WiFi, where it gives me the massage of "Something went wrong". I did some search and tried DHCP Reservation on my router. Tried switching to another IP for the Kobo, played around with the options of WiFi bands and such to no avail. It connects but few seconds after I chose the Time zone and it tells me that it is updating it disconnects and gives the error. I thought about copying the latest firmware to the SD card but ever since I stupidly formatted I have no access to the card through Windows. I am wondering it my only chose now is to boot up a Linux distro from a USB and try koreader/okreader or such. I saw that some people are even making the Kobo like a Linux tablet. I am so angry at myself that all of this started because I naively formatted all of the partitions on the SD card. I can't use Kobo desktop or even connect the Kobo over USB as two of the four ports on the board are damaged. Thank you in advance for any potential tips on where to go from here.

A possible reason for this is that the factory firmware in the image is either 3.14.0 or a late 3.13.x release. I don't know if these include the later versions of the security protocols needed for accessing the Kobo servers. I know that 3.19.x does, but, I don't know when the change happened in the firmware. If that is the case, my recommendation would usually be to use the Kobo desktop application, or manually install the firmware and then do the WiFi setup. But, if the USB port is not working, your only choice for doing anything is to take the card out of the device and update it from the PC. Using Linux or a Mac to do this is easier. I can't remember if Windows will mount the book partition safely or not. It might work, but I've never tried.

Hello again David,

I managed to mount the SD card with Linux, but now I have a different issue. I am unsure of where to put the file/folder of the firmware so that Kobo updates when I insert the SD card back in to the reader. I tryed with the 4.18 version of the firmware. I put the zip file on the rootfs partition, then inside the root folder, then I tryed it unpacked, tryed zipped and unpacked on the KOBOeReader partition... nothing worked. What I am doing wrong? I search for where to insert the firmware on the SD card everywhere on the net, no luck. Thank you for any info you might provide.

The firmware update files need to go inside the ".kobo" directory that is the KOBOeReader partition. Unpack the downloaded zip file and put the files "KoboRoot.tgz" and "manifest.md5sum" and the directory "upgrade" there.

That will get the files onto the card. But, it doesn't trigger the firmware update. That happens when you disconnect the device from USB. If the device does do something when you connect to USB, but won't actually connect to the PC, it might be enough.
