Can anyone who's bought from Audiobooks.com recently tell me if I can play their books outside their app? There are a few titles on sale that are tempting, but only if I can transfer them to my mp3 player. Thanks.

If you have an Android device it works great. I assume it works okay if you have an iThing but I cannot confirm.

I have Android. What I want to know is if I can move it to my PC or mp3 player after downloading. I don't want to use their app to listen.

Yes you can. I have the a couple of books with them and you can download them with the Android app. Once downloaded you will find them here:

Internal Storage / Android / data / com.audiobooks.androidapp / files / books

They will be named in the format 123456.mp3 rather than the name of the book itself and the mp3 files do not appear to have any protection on them.

Grab one of their free titles first if you are unsure and want to check it out yourself.

Just like Audible, once you own a book from them you can access it with their app even after you cancel your membership.

Thanks. I couldn't find a free book to try it out. I had purchased books from them several years ago, and at that time I could listen outside the app, but I was afraid they might have changed their file format to add DRM, the way some of the other stores have.

Thanks, Fidney and Skinmaan. Lordy, I'd forgotten how screwy audiobooks.com is. The app and the website are vastly different. I couldn't get a free book through the website (no way to add to the cart without signing up for a free trial), but could through the app. I couldn't buy a book through the app, but could through the website, but had to download through the app. Ridiculous.

But I did get the book I wanted (The Traitor by V.S. Alexander) for the $7 sale price, instead of having to use a credit at Audible. And I can play it in my mp3 player; yay.

Skinmaan's link worked on the website, returning the list of free books. But once I clicked on a title, I couldn't get the book. Neither the site nor the app is user friendly--I guess it's not an issue if one is a member and/or a regular user, but for me it was something of a nightmare.

Thanks for providing the info about the sale--the book I got is one I really wanted to read, and it's not in the Overdrive catalog.

To get a book added to your library without using the app, you start playing the book on the website. When you get to the end of the preview (typically 3-5 minutes) you will be asked if you want to continue. If you say yes it goes into the full book and the title is added to your library.

Agreed, it is not user friendly.

  When does my rental period begin?
  
  Your rental timer will begin counting down when you first initiate the download on your device or 10 days after purchase, whichever comes first.

  How long can I listen to a title?
  
  All digital rentals provide a minimum of 30 days to listen to a book from the time you initiate your first download. With some of our longer books, such as Atlas Shrugged (63hrs), we extend the listening period to 60 days. You do have the option of purchasing a 5, 10, or 20 day extension after you have made your rental purchase.

  How many times can I listen to my rental?
  
  You may listen to a rental as many times as you would like until it expires.

  Can I extend my rental time period?
  
  Once you are logged into your Downpour.com account, you can purchase a time extension for any of your previous rentals via THIS link. After clicking “Extend Rental,” you have the option of purchasing a 5-day ($1.95), 10-day ($2.95) or 20-day ($4.95) extension. If your rental has not yet expired, the purchased time will be added onto your rental. (Example: if your rental has one day remaining, and you purchase a five-day extension, you will now have six days total before your rental expires.) If your rental has already expired, the extension will allow you to listen to your book again for the amount of time purchased.

  Can I have the same rental on more than one device?
  
  You may listen to your audiobook rental on as many personal devices as you own. Your rental time will be synced across all devices on which you have installed the Downpour app.
