In my day, we had to use the mail to post to the thread, and then wait for the thread magazine to arrive in the mail to show us who had posted and had the win.

Well I remember having to wait by the side of the road for the pony express to come by while worrying relentlessly whether the rider encountered any hazards on the way to deliver my win.
