If your Kobo is open to a book, just slide up from the left side of the screen to turn on the light. You can adjust the level from there.

when turned on the device automatically open the home page so you cannot immediately slide your finger on the side of the screen to increase/decrease the backlight

But why is it turned off? It should be left to sleep and it can be left to sleep while in a book.

If you're going to have it off for a month, probably.

If it's just for a day (and the wifi is off), it won't make any difference at all.

Not if you are using your Reader often enough. But if you plan not to use it for say 5 days or more, then sure, turn it off.
