So right now device goes into nickel and I also have a bunch of .png images displayed as books, like appbar.align.right.

What steps should I take to recover the start menu functionality?
I don't know whether KSM 9 is working with the most recent firmware. My guess is that it might work with some models and won't with others.
If you still would like to restore KSM try the following (I am not certain whether this procedure is sound. I did not really follow the developments of the last months. Or years?)

Step 1:
Prevent that nickel will again reads files from dot folders into the database, by inserting the change described here
and at the same time (don't disconnect the device from the pc in between) rename the folder .adds to .addsx. Now disconnect the device. The expected result is that nickel removes appbar.align.right.png etc. from the database
Step 2: rename .addsx back to .adds and copy KBStartMenu_09_restore.zip (you can find it in the first post) to .kobo

KSM09 and firmware 4.22.15190 actually still work on my first generation Aura H2O.

I like the fact that KSM starts koreader first.

KSM is NOT dead. It still works fine for those of us who don't need, or want nickel running. Now it may not work with some devices using some of the Kobo firmwares, but, if you are not interested in any of the "improvements" provided to the Kobo software; it is easy to use earlier firmware.

Luck;
Ken

True, but without being updated it's going to become more and more problematic as new devices which are locked to firmware versions beyond what KSM will work on properly to use.

In that it's like the various Night Mode/Invert Screen hacks here, they might still work on the current firmware with the right devices, but there are better more reliable options available to achieve effectively the same thing.

KSM isn't dead, but it's on life support, and no one appears to be paying the bills.

As we've seen, if KSM is not going to work, it can require a factory reset. So it's best to not take the risk as we don't know where it will work.

Even though KSM09 is working in some situations we don't know about everything as a whole? Is KSM09 just working to start the devices sans Nickel? If KSM09 is set on the working device to allow Nickel to run, does it work?

For my devices, it works just fine with latest koreader. KA1 and H2O (first version, not second). Didn't update to latest firmware though.

But, you obviously knows something I don't. And yes, I don't want to use nickel, if I don't have to. That's why I don't update firmware and everything works for me without problems.

And yes, I still hope that some day tshering will continue to develop KSM, I'd certainly use it on newer devices if possible.

No, it can't.
I don't update the reader's firmware anymore (still in 3.4.1 I think), just KOReader, so, no danger here.. ;o)
Perhaps it's also better for my reader's small memory to fully unload Nickel before using KOReader..

Is anyone who is using KSM booting directly into KOReader bypassing Nickel?

I have no idea when I last (re)booted the device and I don't autostart anything from KSM, but in essence that'd be an accurate description.
