Free Today on Amazon UK - Samain by Meg Elizabeth Atkins

Spoiler:
From the moment he walks into Marchsteam, Henry Beaumont knows it is no ordinary village…

He has inherited a mysterious house left by his late Aunt, who he has never met.

The village is steeped in history and dark secrets, all of which linger in the hidden network of ancient trackways.

The eccentric array of inhabitants are no better – haunted by their pasts, plagued by long-lost disappearances and obsessed with the village’s history, they only make Henry even more suspicious.

Upon his arrival in the village, Henry spies a solitary woman crossing the common – a figure who looks out of place and time.

A woman, it would seem, that no-one appears to have any knowledge of...

The circumstances become even stranger, as Henry becomes woven into a curious pattern of events.

It's not long before he realises that there is far more going on in the seemingly quiet village of Marchsteam than meets the eye.

The date on the calendar draws ever closer to October 31st – a night better known amongst the pagans as Samain.

The night when the dead walk amongst the living.

The mystery deepens, as he discovers his late Aunt was supposedly involved in witchcraft, and that the old man living in the sinister house that the end of the village is obsessed with finding his missing niece.

Are the two connected in some way?

When the night of October 31st finally arrives, all the clocks in Henry’s house stop at midnight.

And he suddenly realises that there’s no getting out now.

He must figure out the truth, no matter what the cost…

A callous killer taunts Dusty Kent

It was a silent death. One blow to her head was all it took. The killer struck Marcia Hamilton, a sixty-year-old grandmother of slim build, from behind. Marcia’s status as a distinguished author could not save her. The killer rolled her body, ‘like a piece of discarded junk’, down into a gully where it remained for almost two weeks.

This murder is the most heinous crime imaginable: the crime of matricide. Dusty Kent is sure of that. But which of Marcia’s four offspring would be capable of such a deed? Dusty is determined to expose the murderer no matter who it is. Can she do it before the killer strikes again? Someone who’s already killed their mother would have no qualms about ‘bumping off’ a mere sibling in order to avoid exposure.

Free today on Amazon UK - Nowhere To Run by Carolyn Davidson

Repeat from March

Spoiler:
Sarah Harmon’s life has been complicated. Very complicated, for a nineteen- year old just leaving high school. But as she steps out on a clear autumn day to run the nearby cliff trails, she’s ready to put the past behind her and move on.

She has a secret one-way plane ticket to a new life, and a plan, waiting.

But time for Sarah has run out. For she’s about to cross paths with someone more twisted than the path she’s running.

Inspector Susan Kovalsky, not long on the job and fleeing her own city demons, has her hands full.

The town of Lion’s Bay might appear picture post-card perfect, nestled on the stunning clear waters of Georgian Bay, but there’s a lot going on under its shiny surface. It seems the more stones she turns over, the more secrets she unearths, and the more ripples she creates.

Will she ever discover who wanted this beautiful young woman dead?

After all, the suspects are in no short supply. How about all the people who lost their savings trusting her father?

Could one of them have sought revenge? What about her fiancé, Tommy Logan, son of a prominent local family? Did he learn of her plans to flee?

And what about Tommy’s strange cousin Trudy? There’s something not right about her at all. And Tommy’s mother sees the way her husband looks at their future daughter-in-law.

But is it just a coincidence that Sarah’s future father-in-law’s first wife died on the very same cliffs?

With eerie similarities to the death of a local young girl years earlier, a murder that has gone unsolved, Inspector Kovalsky’s suspicions deepen.

Reports that the lovely Sarah had a bit of a wild side unnerve our detective as she begins to solve the crime.

I don't usually like to post Kindle Daily Deals, leaving those to others with a more direct interest in doing so, but today's US Kindle Daily Deal is pretty good: 14 titles in the Aimee Leduc series by Cara Black for $1.99 each. This is all except the most recent two, so I'm not going to bother to list them. If you need it, it is probably on the list! I picked up the few remaining titles I needed, except the last two.

Amazon AU has the 6 x Inspector Allan Grant series in an omnibus edition for $1.99:
1. The Man in the Queue
2. A Shilling for Candles
3. The Franchise Affair
4. To Love and Be Wise
5. The Daughter of Time
6. The Singing Sands
https://www.amazon.com.au/INSPECTOR-...icia+wentworth
blurb:
Spoiler:
This volume contains six mystery novels by amazing British writer Elizabeth Mackintosh, who wrote under the pen names "Josephine Tey" and "Gordon Daviot"

In five of the novels the hero is Scotland Yard Inspector Alan Grant. (Grant appears in a sixth, The Franchise Affair, as a minor character.)

The most famous of these is The Daughter of Time, in which Grant, laid up in hospital, has friends research reference books and contemporary documents so that he can puzzle out the mystery of whether King Richard III of England murdered his nephews, the Princes in the Tower. Grant comes to the firm conclusion that King Richard was totally innocent of the death of the Princes.

In 1990, this novel was selected by the British-based Crime Writers' Association as the greatest mystery novel of all time.

The Franchise Affair, also included in this collection, was 11th on the same list. Although set in the 1940s, it is based on the 18th-century case of Elizabeth Canning.

The Singing Sands, last of the books in this collection, was found in her papers after her death, and published posthumously.

Edit
Kobo AU has the individual Allan Grant novels for 99c, and other Tey for $1.02.

The Open Road-published Lord Peter Wimsey Mysteries omnibus contains (big surprise) the first three titles in the Lord Peter/Harriet Vane series by Dorothy L. Sayers: Whose Body?, Clouds of Witness, and Unnatural Death. It has has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle US and Kobo US (couponable). I think some versions of some of these are PD in some countries, but in any case, $2.99 is a pretty good price for three classic titles, IMO.

Kobo US: https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/eb...-through-three
Spoiler:
Quote:
A special edition of the first three classic mysteries featuring British aristocrat and sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey.

A gentleman needs hobbies. For Lord Peter Wimsey—a Great War veteran with a touch of shell shock—collecting rare books, sampling fine wines, and catching criminals help pass the time.

In Whose Body?, a dead man wearing nothing but a pince-nez is found in the bathtub of an architect’s London flat—and Wimsey encounters a bizarre puzzle.

Clouds of Witness brings Lord Wimsey to the family’s shooting lodge in Yorkshire. Humans are not meant to be targets, but Wimsey’s sister’s fiancé has been felled by a bullet—and his brother accused of the crime. The investigation will bring him into contact with a socialist agitator, a hot-tempered farmer, and a host of unseemly secrets.

In Unnatural Death, everyone expected the ailing and elderly Miss Agatha Dawson to die—just not quite so soon. When the doctor who treated her shares his suspicions with Wimsey, he sets out to discover who rushed the patient to her demise.

This exciting volume of renowned author Dorothy L. Sayers’s beloved cozy British mystery series is a perfect introduction for new readers, as well as a familiar friend for longtime fans.

Striding Folly is a collection of three shorter Lord Peter/Harriet Vane stories. It has also dropped to $2.99 at both Kindle US and Kobo US (again couponable).

Spoiler:
Quote:
In his final 3 stories, Lord Peter confronts the greatest mystery of all—fatherhood

For decades, Lord Peter Wimsey has made life tough for England’s criminal class. In town and country he solved some of the most baffling mysteries of the Jazz Age, facing down killers armed only with wit, charm, and a keen nose for deception. His work brought him 1 great reward: the love of beautiful mystery novelist Harriet Vane. After years of pleading, he has finally convinced her to marry him. Now the real adventure begins.

In the final 3 Wimsey stories, Lord Peter confronts land barons, killers, and the terror that comes from raising 3 young sons. Through it all, his clear thinking never fails him, and he solves these last puzzles as successfully as he did his 1st. He may be a family man now, but like good wine, a great detective only gets better with age.

Striding Folly is the 15th book in the Lord Peter Wimsey Mysteries, but you may enjoy the series by reading the books in any order.

This ebook features an illustrated biography of Dorothy L. Sayers including rare images from the Marion E. Wade Center at Wheaton College.

And finally, since we are talking about Dorothy Sayers books, I'll note that A Treasury of Sayers Stories, which is exactly what it sounds like, a collection of 24 short stories (mostly Lord Peter, a few Montague Egg, fewer others), is a long-term $2.99 title at Kindle US.

The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax is the first in the almost outrageously cute Mrs. Pollifax series by Dorothy Gilman. I don't usually go much for cute/cozy, but I've really enjoyed this series in DTB, maybe for the venues (which is something that makes me tend to like books) or maybe just because they are really fun.

The series does have a distinct cold-war bent to it, so you need to remember (or at least be aware of) cold war politics and geography, but so long as you regard them as "recent historicals", rather than something contemporaneous (as they were when published), I think they are still very enjoyable. Anyway, Unexpected has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US.

Quote:
"Mrs. Pollifax is an enchantress."
THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW
Mrs. Virgil (Emily) Pollifax of New Brunswick, New Jersey, was a widow with grown children. She was tired of attending her Garden Club meetings. She wanted to do something good for her country. So, naturally, she became a CIA agent. This time, the assignment sounds as tasty as a taco. A quick trip to Mexico City is on her agenda. Unfortunately, something goes wrong, and our dear Mrs. Pollifax finds herself embroilied in quite a hot Cold War--and her country's enemies find themsleves entangled with one unbelievably feisty lady.

Got a Kindle ereader? If so, you're eligible to receive a free copy of Murder Mezzo Forte (4.8 stars (5 reviews) at Amazon; 4.67 (3 reviews) at GoodReads), by Donn Taylor.

You must have a Kindle ereader and a Kindle email address to obtain this freebie.

The price of the Kindle mobi at Amazon is $1.99. For your convenience, here is the URL for the book's webpage at Amazon.

There are a few hoops to jump through. Here is the whole lowdown, from the publisher:
In order to receive your FREE Kindle copy, please ...
1) Email us your Kindle email address. (Note: your Kindle email address ends with @kindle.com. You can find your Kindle email address at: http://www.amazon.com/gp/sendtokindle/email)

2) Allow lighthousepublishingcarolinas@gmail.com to send files to your Kindle. (To add our e-mail address to your "Approved Personal Document E-mail List," visit the Personal Document Settings page at Manage Your Kindle. Click "Settings" (right hand side) and scroll down to Personal Document Settings.)

The publisher is Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas. I know that at least some of what they publish is directed toward Christians. I do not know if there is anything religious in this book.

Here's the webpage to go to to read more about the offer.
