Good idea. Wish that I had thought of it. ha

TSHA also offers a free 2014-15 almanac. 700 or so pages I think. I could post information about it, too, if anyone is interested. I decided to post just one of their offerings (the Alamo one), the one which I felt would have a wider appeal.

Yeah, I had just caught a glimpse of it. I hadn't checked into the details and gone back to check if it had been posted before (I think that I might have been the one who posted it before, too. They say that the memory is one of the first things to go . . . . ha).

I wonder if this book is as biased as the actual site of the Alamo is? I was appalled when I visited there at how utterly one-sided the information was.

Harry, what I learned in a history class is history is always written by the winners.

Though I think one-sided is an understatement.

Now I will say for the TSHA, they are usually unbiased. There was an explosion at a school in 1937. At least the TSHA mentioned that the bill that could have prevented the explosion had been sitting in the state legislature for 2 years.
The bill was to put an odorant in natural gas.
For more information, it was the New London School Explosion.
Side note: my granddad skipped school that day to work.

You wouldn't know that the way they glorify James Bowie and Davy Crockett.
Goliad was even more biased.

It's the winning side for the war that writes the history of the war, including whatever individual battles they lost.

Good question. I've downloaded the book, but haven't had a chance to read it--won't have a chance for a while. But, I'll try to skim it in the next few days.

If it is very biased, I'm not going to encourage anyone else to obtain it or even mention it to anyone. Such stuff is an embarrassment to the United States and almost literally sickens me. I mean stuff like how the American government STOLE land from the native Americans/indigenous people ("Indians"), STOLE land from the Mexicans, and STOLE land from numerous others. Not to mention that they slaughtered large numbers of the people.

As far as the Alamo is concerned (I had to look this up, I'm not this smart), it is a National Historic Landmark. The Alamo building was controlled by the state of Texas, but "In early 2015, Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush officially removed control of the Alamo to the Texas General Land Office." (Wikipedia). The TGLC, from what I gather, is almost certainly a private organization.

Frankly, I'm sure that if the federal government ran it, it would be much less sympathetic to the Texas Revolution--maybe not sympathetic at all. Being run by Texans (and I'm no Texas-hater--I've posted several ebooks that encourage people to visit there, have several dear friends who are Texans, etc.--this is just the truth.), however, I can see how it would be biased in favor of it.

Fascinating about your grandfather.

Yeah, it is a shame that more Americans aren't aware of the explosion. Several hundred children were killed. It holds the record in the U.S. for deadliest school disaster in the country--there are no other instances that even come close. I wonder if it is not mentioned because it was not done deliberately--terrorism, etc. It does get mentioned occasionally in the news when there is violence with deaths at a school in modern times, to put the modern one "in context" or whatever.

437 school children, 10 teachers and 1 5 year old.

The reason for the explosion was no one could smell the gas, as natural gas is odorless.
If the Texas legislation had passed the odorant bill in 1935 or 1936, the explosion would not have happened.
They passed the bill on May 18, 1937. The explosion was March 18, 1937.
