Very sad day. Carina Press and Harlequin are not couponable at Kobo today. I just tested a couple titles, the code worked fine on other books but not the Harlequins.

I sure am glad I bought a ton of new and paper replacement books with big codes while they were still working.

Since Harlequin & Carina (and Avon) are competing more directly with small pubs (like Samhain, Liquid Silver, etc.) and self-pubs all of which can be discounted this could turn out to be very bad for them. I've read more than once that Harlequin (overall) is losing market share to these other outlets quite a bit and this just gives the competitors one more advantage.

Wonder what this bodes for coupons on the Harlequin site (not that they're always great) and the rewards program.

There is a code on the front page of the Harlequin site today for $5 off $15. So I'm a little hopeful. But those codes aren't anywhere near as good as some of the Kobos.

Not being able to coupon them will definitely cut down on my purchases. . . which is probably a good thing.

Harlequin & Carina are both still couponable at Kobo Canada (for now). I just checked with a Carina new release and a Harlequin MIRA boxset and both worked up to the checkout stage, at least.

I don't know if this changes in the next couple of days, but if anyone outside of our 10 provinces and 3 territories manages to luck out on any more good Kobo coupons (or just wants to go through the unused ones on the 1st page of the dedicated coupon thread), it might be a good time to "travel" when shopping.

(And with our petro-dollar currently drowning itself in the tar sands, the exchange rate probably works out really, really well in your favour.)

To the tune of 20-30%! And remember Alberta, AFAIK, has the lowest tax rate of 5% so keep that in mind.

I see HarperCollins either killing Harlequin in the long run or it will be merged into Avon romance which would be a nightmare for all HQ fans.

Bummer. It will definitely cut down on my purchases as well. I'm sure the folks at Harlequin/Carina are not happy about it. They were big on pointing out how they weren't agency back when the Agnecy stuff first went into affect.

The Harlequin site at least occasionally has coupons like today's $5 off $15. The Carina site rarely has such coupons. I have a ton of Carina titles in my library. But I will be hesitant to try new authors there if I have to pay full price (even if most of their books are not $7.99+).

It's possible I suppose, but Harlequin and Mills & Boon are some of the longest most established names in the industry. I don't see HC not taking advantage of that.

The question will be if those coupons, just like the rewards program, are allowed to continue. Old Agency had most favored nation contracts putting stores all on "equal" footing. IIRC MFN was ruled a no-no in the lawsuit, but will HC give one of their company stores an advantage over other sellers. We don't know what the new contracts are like.

IIRC, most provinces eliminated the PST/HST on eBooks so now it's just the 5% GST being charged in most areas. At least, I only pay 5% now at Kobo from BC whereas previously it was 12% when the PST was also still in effect.

Does anyone here read Harlequin Intrigue, because if some people here do and have picked up some of the rereleased backlist books, can you think of any sane reason why of the huge batch of books they rereleased in October they would have released four different trilogies but only included two books in each set? If they were hoping for new readers with the rereleases, I can only imagine how confused those poor people must have ended up being. Someone please tell me I wasn't the only one who noticed this. If HarperCollins can't figure out that if you're rereleasing a trilogy of books, then you should probably release all of them at the same time I'm not sure they need to be in the publishing business.
