I usually wait for years. For PDA's, I waited until I could get a Palm IIIxe used for $25 or so. But I think that the no-monthly-fee 3G web service, which makes this such a bargain in my mind, may be gone if I wait that long. This is my excuse for, the first time ever, jumping onto the bleeding edge.

For the last couple days, I have gotten zero crashes, after getting maybe two last week. Just reading books and Instapaper, I have had no problems, with or without background music playing.

Compared to Windows 3, I think Kindle 3 is reasonably stable. (Or was Windows 95 the bad one?)

One thing I did NOT do is put dozens of books on the device. I read three books at once, max, and have no interest in a handheld library. Maybe this contributes to stability, maybe not. I do have hours of MP3's on there.

They're all metal shielded. Instead of putting an obvious, and heavy, steel tankard around the K3, they use a subtle conductive paint job around the interior case. It's electrically equivalent to wrapping the whole thing in tin foil, if you give a proper single-path ground to the foil (so many nuts forget this!). You can't get all those fancy little agency stamps on the back without such shielding.

Posting in this thread as well.

Interesting that it has two different files for the two different Kindle 3G+WiFis. B006 being US store (AT&T) and B00A being UK store (Voda)

Just a warning though. I don't think they've done it for 3.0.1 but it is possible that Amazon will close the debug exec hole in a future update so if it is important for you then don't update until somebody can confirm.

After a day of fairly smooth operation, my Kindle Wifi froze, so I reset it, and now it refuses to boot...

I've tried resetting it multiple times by holding the power switch 15-20 sec, but it always seems to get stuck loading at about 25%.

Any suggestions?

make sure it is fully charged first, I would leave it on charge for a few hours then try to switch on again. If no luck try to hard reset again but make sure it is disconnected from USB when you do this. Hopefully that will work.........

Update - well it arrived this morning.

Never having seen one in the flesh before, it is a lot smaller and neater than I had expected.

If it remains stable, it may just wean me off my love of Sony.

it means that if you are interested in hacking the firmware don't update it...

Thanks for the tip. My Kindle is now back in action.

However, could you explain why the Kindle should be disconnected from USB prior to restarting?

It would go into USB drive mode if it was and during that time, the Kindle itself can't access the contents of the drive.

Ah thanks.

Also, I thought I'd share some of the problems I've been having the past couple days with my Kindle 3 Wifi:

1st Incident - After clicking on "launch browser" in the Experimental section, the device froze, and reset automatically after a few seconds

2nd Incident - After clicking on "Shop in the Kindle Store" from the main menu, the device once again froze, and reset automatically

3rd Incident - when searching for new wireless access points, the device froze, and required my first hard reboot. From here, it was not able to start up again until I fully recharged the device and rebooted again. I should point out that prior to freezing, the battery was about 75% full, and NO books were currently being indexed.

So based on the experiences I've had, I'd say that there are some definite issues related to the browser aspect of the device (amongst the other issues that others have been having).

In the meantime, I think I'll use my K3 without wifi for awhile, or try out the early release 3.01 firmware.

Browser is known to be extremely buggy.

Same again. The browser is used to access the store.

No idea about this one. They did do some changes to the WiFi driver and the SDIO driver in 3.0.1 but it mostly appears to be power management related.

2 out of your 3 are browser issues. It is only the last one that is WiFi related.
