did you not copy/paste the VITAL files on the irex and illiad to your pc before you copy/pasted your books to it? why don't you just re-format the IREX and Iliad 's flash memory and reset/restore it? i bet i could fix it easily. |

Can someone please advise me about large PDFs? I downloaded 3 volumes of Mayhew's London Labour and the London Poor (all about 50 Mb each) onto my computer desktop. I then transferred them successfully onto the Kindle 3 by dragging but I couldn't drag them onto the Kindle for PC. I haven't had this problem with other stuff.

No, I don't believe it does. Why not just read them in Adobe Reader?

i thought and i thought and i thunk and i thunked and think i solved it! I THINK I HAVE SOLVED IT! Eureka! you take the dictionary (1 megabyte ) of the file you have just compressed (eg 10 megabytes) and you then lay it out in a table or graphic format , etc. And then you take a snapshot of it in jpg format. thus you have a jpg file which represents the 1 megabyte dictionary which in turn represents the original file. The jpg file will only be a 100 kilobytes or so for a decent picture of the dictionary tables. What do you think? |

Well, I have about 2600 books on my Kindle right now, and its still indexing, so performance isn't wonderful, but it isn't terrible either. Like it was mentioned before, I don't think its much of an issue once you get done indexing.

That is a line from a Moonlighting episode in which David Addison's brother Richard turns up and is trying to sell diet products. See it on youtube...it is a classic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ybh0AV5GrWc but what about my idea above? |

1 - I don't think are going to get a 100 KB picture of a 1 MB text unless you seriously compromise the image quality, which leads to 2 - You will have to pass the image through an OCR process to get the dictionary, and OCR is not always accurate (and heavily depends on the image quality) 3 - As I said before, it's not enough to preserve the dictionary alone. You have to keep the compressed file as well. |

I want to be able to read and refer to them on the Kindle. I thought the advantage of Kindle for PC was that you could swop between one and the other.

Actually, here's the next Stieg Larsson novel compressed to a single bit: 0.

935 here. Took a while to load (~12 hours), but that was because Calibre had to convert them all to .mobi. Indexing took another 8-9 hours and just about a full charge.
Searching now is something I avoid. I'll hit page forward 40 times to find a book long before I try a search. |
