My head.
Achilles is called Pelides as he is the son of Peleus. Pè in Italian Piè in French is a poetic licence for foot.A nice interpretation of a very ancient story. horse tamer I like it more then breaker of horses. ![]() Achilles was the son of the nymph Thetis and Peleus, the king of the Myrmidons. Relating him to foot is also part of his destiny. He was invulnerable except for his heel and there he was hit by an arrow from the starter of all the trouble, the thief of wifes Parides. People are divided in two. Who admires Achilles and who admires Hector. They behave differently if you want to hit them for a bit of cash or to steal a kiss. |

(foot is pied in french btw) However, I'm not sure it matches up to 'Peleus' - I wonder what the etymology is of the name?* - and the meter (I think it's called) of the verse, seems off, isn't it supposed to be six beats per line? (I don't know the right terminology) *my greek-english dictionary isn't very comprehensive - it offered up pelos (πηλος) = mud, clay - (Peleid: Πηληϊάδεω ) |

It's in exameters. bum bim bim bum bim bim. But that's the original in Greek. Rendition vary. It was chanted in a way, accompanied by percussionists. With dancers also. And the guys and their queenly ladies, reclining and drinking horrible concoctions of resinous wine mixed with water and with grated goat cheese in it. In music it would be a 6/8. More like a pavana. Stately An Epic style. |

Plus, if somebody wants to buy The wars of Tucidites or the Iliades to read under a fig tree during this Summer, like I am doing with Stefano Dedalo, either he does not need this trick, or if he does he will throw the books to the stinging nettles after reading 5 words and get souled* as fast as possible.

As far as I know the "Peleïd" is a sort of patronymic, it states that Achilleus is of Peleus' family. And Peleus is Achilleus' father.
Hexameter - hexametron. The two danish translations I know both respect this in the translation. Last edited by Ea; 07-31-2010 at 05:00 PM. |

I must admit you got me red handed there.
The foot is just an excuse for the foolishness of the explanation, that when I wrote it seemed fine. The end justifies the means. Do not forget that I have a Catholic upbringing. Will you ever forgive me, oh red umbrellaed beauty? |

It's time for choosing the best post for this ambitious thread (up to now). Among the many quality posts, there are two (2) that stand out. They are not comparable in scope so I solved the problem of choosing one by choosing both but in different sections. Smart eh? That's why I am the thread leader.
Section on Case Studies vivaldirules wins first prize (a bonanza of heavy caliber Karma: who believes this will believe anything) for his genial post in which, very brilliantly in the words of an expert, he examine Beckett, Hesse, Shakespeare, Clark and Maugham, with real and amazing results. Outstanding. Section on Advancement of Knowledge: Techniques and Methods Ea wins first prize (a bonanza of heavy caliber Karma: oh yes, believers) for her daring and accurate study. From the original post "To really determine whether it works or not, I think we would need a large sample of books. Preferably chosen by blindfolded people to make the selection random. It wouldn't do to choose only "good books" or "trash". Then, a scientifically chosen(*) number of people will try to create a sentence from the beginning and end of each book. If at least 50% of these sentences make sense to a randomly selected MR overlord (a.k.a. moderator) the book will be deemed "good" and compliant to the hypothetical principle. *someone with a science degree selects a random number between 1 and 9" Some comments are in order on this brilliant proposal blindfolded The humanitarian quality is reflected in this choice. The proponent prefers incurring in heavier expensse for the heavy cloth to be cut and stitched instead of what her ancestors (or mine for that matter), would had done without a glitch. It is much cheaper, faster and easy to blind the choosers with even simple implements (the point of a knife for example or even a stick of wood). This present choice will be appreciated by the image controllers of the Administration. scientifically chosen When a methodological step is scientific it has to be scientific in all of its part, or the scientific "continuity" is lost. These are traps that can be avoided only by an approach made of careful design and scientific supervision of the experiment. It does not matter if the budget plummets. This is a problem of the Administrators and of the fund risers. Excellent. It is with this passage that the proposal wins. MR overlord One starts to doubt his eyes. Is she serious or ... She is very serious: she explains that they are the moderators. ![]() ![]() Both posts in the category best of the bestest. Hey, I didn't write them. I just read them. But it's curious how well this works on some novels - as if it was intentional.

If JSB and his chums were capable of such feasts of interweaving with voices, themes, and cadenza, why not imagine literaly artisans of that caliber to design and write (type) similar embroideries. I might be able to reach the journalist/writer that started this funny game and through him his friend and know more. Maybe he is a swell guy. Who knows, these intellectuals can be a surprise. |
