I thought we could search within books already?

Also, I wouldn't mind a social networking feature of some sort, maybe one that posts to Facebook your currently read books or whatever, if you favorite them or want to quote from them.

Whilst unpopular for some I bet, I would enjoy this feature

I think the poll is showing some interesting results. When it closes in another week or so, I'll compile and see if we (all of us users who care) can help put some design to it that makes sense. Thanks for voting.

Better Highlighting Capability

I have my nook for a few weeks and am frustrated with the quirky performance of the highlighting feature. I wish it was as easy as Word.

I apparently voted for 4 (!)

1. The ability to create folders and sub-folders
2. Show B&W book cover icon in library

And I would take either of these, since they essentially tell me what I'm reading/have read:
A percentage meter to show book progress in library view
A list and links to the last 5 books opened

I'd like to delete on-device, but since I'm suing calibre to manage ALL my books, and I tag books I'm reading, I've got a system for deleting what I want.

No problem with choosing more than three. The goal is to see what is most important to everyone.

The ones I want:

To have a unified library (or at least have it as an option) I find that I tend to forget to read the books in My Documents, and it would be readily available at quick glance.

The ability to create folders/categories. (I am a school librarian, and organizing books and items is what I do. I would love it for the nook)

A Link to the last 5 books read. I also would utilize this a lot. At any given time I can be in the middle of 3-5 books, like I am now, and it is a pain to have to enter the library and re-search the books.

I think we're getting good response to the poll now. I'd like to see if we can hit 100 votes but I don't even know if 100 Nook owners are on this board.

Anyway, just so every knows, I am considering doing a design for each of the top three features. If anyone has experience in designing functionality, please jump in if you want to lend a hand. Even if you can just look over the design to make sure I'm not off in left field somewhere.

Once that is done, the question is whether to try to get in touch with B&N to implement the features or maybe there is a different way to go about it?

No disrespect to the softroot developers and users, by the way. I appreciate and admire what you do. I guess I am just looking for a seamless integration of features that falls within the original software's framework. Hope that makes sense.

While I am at it, I guess I'll ask a question.

Is it possible to create firmware for the device that would completely replace the B&N firmware?

What I am thinking is that, if it was possible, then we would be able to create our own SDK and a system of plug-ins. Just a thought; it's probably too ambitious.

Anyway, thanks to all who have responded to the poll.

I've had my Nook for about two weeks now, and I most definitely want:

1) Folders and subfolders. The Nook puts everything in the same place, which can get pretty damn crowded pretty damn quick. Folders is THE feature B&N should implement with their new firmware. Hell, Stephen King's works alone would be 15 pages in the My Documents directory. That we can't just have a Stephen King folder is absurd.

2) Deleting on the fly. A rather distant second to folders, but this would be really convenient. There's a number of reasons to delete files: you finish a book, a book isn't formatted properly, a book just plain stinks...it'd be really convenient to be able to delete without having to load up Calibre.

I have other, minor quibbles with the Nook, but the above can almost certainly be done with firmware updates; B&N just has to listen to their customers. Though there may be some reason they wouldn't want those changes to happen, but I can't think why.

I noticed that a fair number of people have checked the option for a list and links to the last five books opened. At least in v1.4, you already have a similar capability. In your library view, change "sort by" to "most recent" and you'll have all your books listed by what you opened most recently. From there, it's easy to choose which book to continue reading next and it's also easy to switch back to sort by author or title or whatever to find new books to read.

The ability to create folders and sub-folders is definitely feature number one I would like to see.

I do not know if this can be done through a software update, but the highlighting needs to be improved. I can see this being very useful to students and scholars. However, it is very cumbersome to mark up pages. If it were easier, the highlighting would far surpass highlighting a physical book. I would be able to quickly go to highlights and notes, rather than either keeping a log of them separately, or flipping pages.

In the grand scheme of ebooks, however, scholars are a small, probably less profitable market, so I am not holding my breath. Right now I rarely use the highlight feature and simply keep a log with notes.

For Lookup cursor, it's fine if it starts at the first line on the screen. However, if it could "wrap around" to the last line when I press the "Up" arrow on touch screen, that would extremely save my time.

The arrows need to be more spaced out (And larger), and the cursor either needs to start in the middle or 'wrap' around to the bottom when i press up like many people have mentioned. And its as SLOW AS COLD TAR!! You press it multiple times and it might go 6 times, when you pressed it 3 times and vice versa. Also when you press it several times it is SLOWWW. grrrr

Really though i dont use it... So i really am good without it improving, they have more important problems right now . Sorry scholars! But as was said, most of my worries are little things that i think they should add, they arn't pressing matters .

Oh one thing i forgot, acaully ill link my question so peeps can read it:

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96487

If anyone is having trouble with this too... They might want to fix it. Its a minor nuisance, but im tired of the progress bar going away!!
