kobo is now dead :(
firmware update didn't work for me. my kobo lies dead.
I am a tech guy; I am not afraid of terminal etc. if someone could send me what this SD card is supposed to have on it, I can try making my own "boot disc"... however, awaiting kobo response to my support request while the reader lies dead and unable to boot. be extremely cautious, folks, while performing firmware update... having no reader sucks. ![]() |

Mine and is installed and appears to be working fine.
I did run into a few little... anomalies. They don't say anything about uninstalling the previous Kobo desktop application. I finally did so, and then installed the new software. When I clicked on the icon, I expected some instructions to be forthcoming, but nothing appeared. It was at this point that I plugged in the Kobo and suddenly the installation instructions appeared automatically. I'm running Windows XP and so I got the "installing new hardware" screens. This took a l-o-n-g time. One other phase of the installation also took a lengthy period of time -- I think it was when transferring the software to the Kobo -- but at least there was a bar showing progress and a countdown timer. At one stage, one is instructed to hold three buttons down simultaneously, at which point the red light is supposed to come on and the screen clears. Which they did, but I had to hit the "try again" button to proceed to the next stage. At a later stage, the instructions say to reset the Kobo by inserting a paperclip in a hole in the back of the case. My first paperclip was too fat, but I did manage to find a skinnier one. The final instruction says to disconnect the Kobo and wait for the reboot to take place. The screen says something like "please wait a moment" but the moment was several minutes long. But all is well that ends well. I've loaded a couple new files and deleted several old ones using Calibre and I'm now charging the battery (with the red light on). Hope this will be of some help to others tackling the upgrade. |

Ouch! Not good news Kyall. I wonder if the Kobo somehow lost usb connectivity to your computer during the upgrade? This could happen even without pulling out the cable, for example if there was a brief power spike/loss to that port - a friend had something like that happen to his phone during an upgrade - the USB port was found to be faulty.
Its the only way I can think of killing it with this upgrade. Hopefully you'll be reading again before too long. |

Good summary, mirrors my experience exactly. May be worth making these notes to people attempting the upgrade. I was fine, but the average Joe could get a bit confused/worried when windows starts installing an update mid-process or the 'moment' at the end drags on. In fact I got briefly worried I might have disconnected too early when it seemed stuck on that last screen.

Hmmm, I take it you've tried the paper clip reset? What about trying the 3 button press to go into upgrade mode again? Surely there must be some way to bring it back if it hadn't even started the upgrade process yet??

SameerH; sorry not to have replied but was both passing info onto Jordan and openning a support ticket.
The screen on the Kobo is as it should be for an update; purple light and blank screen. I think you can tell it IS in update mode by the prompt from Windows to install a USB device driver; if the unit was not in update mode I believe it would still be returning the regular USB class ID to Windows; not the upgrade one. The issue though appears to be the device driver not installing. In Device Mananger there is an entry for "Other Devices" / SEC S3C24X0A SMDK B/D with an yellow exclamation mark. Selecting the device gives Code:
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) The system cannot find the file specified. Code:
Driver Management concluded the process to install driver FileRepository\sec_s3c24x0a_smdk_bd.inf_4815e60c\sec_s3c24x0a_smdk_bd.inf for Device Instance ID USB\VID_5345&PID_1234\5&1239C560&0&3 with the following status: 2. or in full mode Code:

My upgrade went well with no problems. The only thing is that when I popped my SD card back in after the upgrade it is doing a full processing of the content again. So I'm watching the progress bar on my kobo move vvveeerrrryyyyy slowly as I think there is almost 1gb of stuff on there. Also as someone mentioned before, I had to reset the time and timezone, the date was still correct.

![]() It would be nice if the desktop app thingie was all fixed up, but then we can look forward to that. Lots of appreciation to Sameer H. and the others at Kobo for staying in touch here. Oh, and of course all of you wiser people were right; the books really do look much, much better when the stylesheet gets left in there. Last edited by corona; 07-02-2010 at 01:58 AM. |

My finished books still show as "new" and show that I am on some random chapter in them. I have tried paging through to the end again to finish them but after I sync with the desktop they are back as they were.
I am not sure if this was one of the things the new upgrade was supposed to cover? |

Under Settings and Device Info it says: Onboard Storage 109 MB out of 160 MB. So I am assuming it is only seeing the partition in which the OS is installed? I can put epubs on an SD card, insert it into the Kobo, and read them succesfully, so it's not entirely useless. But this is still not an acceptable long term state of affairs.
