One nice thing you can get for free from the IF archive is a collection of classic Scott Adams adventures that he's kindly made available for free. They're not as detailed or complicated as the Infocom stuff but well worth a play. I used to play them in cartridge format on my Vic-20

BUMP!
Hate to see this thread get buried.
Have you heard of Malinche Entertainment?
No, I have no financial or any other involvement.

Somewhat related, there are also a couple of companies producing choose your own adventure type apps. Gamebook Adventures are only available for the iPhone, while Fighting Fantasy ones are available for the iPad as well.

Well, I have had a similar line up over the years.

Amongst other things:
1. I started with a ZX81 and then went to the expanded memory and eventually got a external keyboard with real(ish) keys.
2. Vic-20
3. C64
4. Amiga
5. PC

Had a lot of gadgets over the years too, just like my tech I suppose.

I played adventures of one sort or another on all these machines at some point and remeber them fondly.

I was thinking of possibly writing some adventures myself. I always wondered just how popular they would be these days but this thread has shown they were and still are loved by many.

I taught myself programming over the last year and was looking at possible things to write. Unfortunately I can't write the stories, but my brother isn't too bad, if a little unreliable at actually finishing something (he has lots of half written books, music and poems).

I may have a go at an adventure if he is up for the challenge of actually finishing one of his stories

You might want to look at inform it's designed for writing interactive fiction and chucks out z-code so you can play the results on almost anything including ipad.

The interactive fiction scene is still quite healthy, it's just not commercial. There is a yearly competition so you could always enter something.

Ah, memories.

My first PC was a VIC20 too, though the first adventure I played was Scott Adam's Count on an Atari 400 - I used to spend an hour on the train every weekend and travel to the closest computer store where the owner let us mess around with his display computers... for a while, anyway... :P

I did have a couple of cartridges for the VIC20, too. I still play a fair amount of IF using various interpreters and platforms. Old habits never die.

As bizarre as it would seem to some, I would actually like one of the new Commodore machines. I like the idea of the "computer in keyboard" design, plus this time around of course they are customizable and expandable.....

I've seen those, and no. I meant the "all in one" like the original Vic20 or C64 and now the new Commodores on the link in my last post..... The screen in a keyboard is a bit much for me, and now with the iPad, I am through with "eee" pc's........ I had the original eee 701 by the way..... I always seem to be an early adopter.....

i think you misunderstand the eee keyboard. it's an additional screen, sort of a soft-keyboard. it still hooks up to the monitor of your choice. even comes with an ultra-wideband hd transmitter/receiver for a wireless link into your HD multimedia system.

And to bring the Amiga reminiscing back to the iPhone/iPad...http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2...ospective.ars/

Quote:
Rabah didn't give up, however. Decades later, now living in Canada, he salvaged the assets of the game and reunited his old team to finish the product. A demo version of the original Amiga code was finally released to the public, with the full release to follow. However, there is another gaming platform that has just arrived on the scene—one where small groups of independent developers can still compete with giant companies. An enhanced version of Babylonian Twins has recently shipped for the iPhone and in an HD version for the iPad. I've played the game, and it is an engaging side-scrolling action puzzler, sort of like Prince of Persia meets The Lost Vikings. It has already won several awards.
