I thought about making more and selling them. But carving out a book is tedious and not very safe, requiring a lot of work with an exacto knife or a straight edge razor. The raw material though, discarded books, is free.

Anyway, I came up with an alternative. I got materials from Hollander's Bookbinding in Ann Arbor MI to make a cover. To replace the pages, I substituted wood, painted white and textured along the edges to look like pages. I carved notches for the buttons on the top and sides.

The Nook sits in a wooden frame glued to the book cover. It's held in place with pieces of velcro. In my present version there is no opening for the charging port. You have to pull it out of the frame. On the next one, I'll cut a notch in the frame for the charging port.

I have enough material to make a dozen more. I thought I had something I could sell like hotcakes but with covers like the Industriell available now, I guess I've been scooped. Mine, though, has some advantages over the Industriell. It looks more like a book. I can make them in a variety of colors such as teal green, royal blue, strawberry or burgundy, etc. It takes a couple of hours to make one, so I can't compete with the Industriell in price. I thought I would put them on EBay for $65. Maybe I can still sell a few.

Here are pictures of the cover.

That is soo cool. Make sure you patent that. seriously. What a fantastic idea.

How's the weight on it?

<< How's the weight on it? >>

By itself, the cover weighs 8.5 oz. With the Nook, 20.5 oz. Its about the weight of a book of comparable size.

I have the leather hard cover that the nook slides into on the bottm and two upper corner straps. Great cover because it protects your nook and looks like a nice wallet. Our B&N store up here in Redding, CA has a great selection of items for the nook. I would call the store and they have a dedicated person at the nook spot in the store that you can ask questions about all the cool stuff they have for nook. Did I add that I love my nook and can't wait to read every chance I get. Sorry for the long reply but I do have a question as well. I have a ton of Audible audio ebooks and need to convert the .aa files to mp3 or something the nook likes, does anyone have any ideas about that? Thanks all, Read On...

I have a M-Edge Platform Jacket w/light for my nook. I love it! It keeps it protected and is nice looking too. The pockets and pen holder are a nice feature too.

So I'm trying to decide on a cover to buy. I will only be buying from the B&N store, so simplify my international shipping situation. Here's the B&N link for their various covers:
http://productsearch.barnesandnoble....E=10&AREF=1536

Anyone have any opinions on the following:

- Industriell Cover (#6). I know a lot of people seem to like it, but I'm concerned about the clips inside. How securely do they hold the nook? Are the clips sturdy enough that they're not going to break off? Is it easy to fit the nook in them, or do you have to sort of force it, risking damage/scratches to your nook?

- Dillane Plaid Cover in Night (#7). I really love the look of this cover (way better than the Industriell). Based purely on appearance, this is the one I'm leaning towards. But the inside, with it's big holder place at the bottom and the two straps on top, could be better. They kind of kill the look. And apparently some people have trouble using the navi-LCD with it?

- Jonathan Adler Punctuation Covert (#19). Looks kinda cool. Same question about the inside as the Dillane.

No, you need to get a kindle if you want to listen to audible. There are a lot of free or cheap sharewares that allow you to record directly from your PC's sound card and save as wav or mp3 files (search "total recorder" for example, "audacity" also works), technically it is not conversion but recording, so it will take as long as the audible file plays, I did once to turn in an audible book to mp3 (turn off all your PC's system sound first - you don't want to hear incoming email alert sound when converting audio books - and let it run overnight).

I have the easel version of this cover. The clips hold the device securely, and it's a much cleaner look, IMHO, than the covers that use a bottom pocket and top corner straps, plus the pocket may sag over time. Also, the Industriell covers seem to be less bulky than the pocket/strap covers. That said, the Industriell cover is very plain looking, so some might want a more stylish cover.

No, they don't seem like they would break under normal use. Yes, it's easy enough to mount the Nook.

I have the B&N front cover and light that was $50. It clips onto the nook so there are no straps. The light is VERY bright. I'm working on putting translucent tape on the three LED's to see if I can come up with a light level I can read by, but not blind other people in the room.

I just bought my Nook today and immediately set about to have a very protective cover. I took the At A Glance planner cover that I used for my Sony 505 in the lightwedge cover because it zips all the way around. I then cut pieces of 1/8" thick Plexiglas to reinforce both front and back covers and sliced the foam from the nook box and inserted it into both sides in between the plexi and the inside of the cover. This way it is rigid to protect the screen yet padded to protect from shocks. My 505 died from a drop that didn't actually break the screen but messed up something in it. The only issue is the I would like to be able to put a tacky surface for the Nook to grab onto, kind of like the pads you can get for the dash of the car to hold phones and MP3 players, but without the added thickness. It is already as full as it can be safely.

Oh yeah, I also removed the metal part of the zipper from the pocket inside as well as the velcro tab that is meant to hold cards in.

So far, so good. Of course, I am always open to advice.

Try the B&N Silicone Frame. The link is to one in Marine blue but they come in several other colors.

I bought the Sinclair cover in Earth tone and it is very nice and for the price you can't beat it. It does have the molded pocket for the nook to sit in and the upper left and right corner straps. It holds it very well and the mounting does not obstruct any part of the nook. When I carry it around it feels like a very nice wallet and the screen is protected very well with the front. I am surprised that LA Barnes and Nobles do not have a good selection. Up here in Northern CA our B&N has covers, backs, extra batteries and people who love to talk about the nook. Happy reading. p.s. did I say that I love my nook? It does have a negative affect on my sleep because I can't put it down...
