Having an account at Amazon.co.uk doesn't give you an account at Amazon.com, and vice-versa.
Apparently it does now. I just tried to change my password at amazon.com and it worked on .co.uk, .fr and .de as well.

They are different accounts, yes, a change in one doesn't automatically reflect on the others, but they must be linked somehow...?
I think you can do this now - I've tried changing my password at several of the amazon sites and the change is reflected on the others. But some years ago in 2006 and 2007 I bought a few items from amazon.fr and amazon.de and then I needed to create an account in each shop. Now, I can log in using the same credentials and even see my old orders (not all orders, but orders with the amazon shop I've logged into - i.e. I can't see my amazon.de orders when I log in to amazon.co.uk for example). I'm as sure as I can be that I couldn't do this three years ago. Essentially, you have one amazon account now.

It took me a while to understand what was going on, though, as it was so counter-intuitive!

I can't find the explanation email at the moment, but seem to recall that it was suggested that at one stage, the 'Reset Password' action would create a new account rather than resetting the old account and clearing the stored payment details, then if you remembered/used the 'old' password you got the 'old' account, while the 'new' one took you to the new one.
Something like this may have happened. I have one account that I've used, and then there's a mysterious second one that's 'empty'; no orders, no browsing history, etc.

Mmm ?
I can use the account on amazon.fr ; amazon.co.uk, and Amazon.com
And i don't remember creating an account on .co.uk, or .com
And changing password for .fr changed it for .co.uk too.

What I remember from three-four years ago was that then I couldn't log in on e.g. amazon.de with my amazon.co.uk credentials, and had to create a new account (it was a little annoying and I think that's why I remember ). Now, it appears I have only one account that works in all amazon shops.

That's strange, because my Amazon account(s) are WAY older than this. I think I started buying from Amazon when I was in Osaka for several months in 2003-4, and I had used amazon.com for a long time before that without buying, just to look for information on books. But I guess things could have changed, and back, since then.

Brilliant! Thanks for those tips

Eh...? We're discussing the Amazon Kindle, not Sony Readers.

When Amazon started promoting the international Kindle they said you could use your "home based" account for buying the device and/or ebooks. Maybe that's when they merged all account-information.

Suffice to say that they merged accounts...incorrectly in some cases. My Parents Amazon.co.uk account with my Amazon.com account, for instance.

Ouch! Not so great. At least it stayed in the family...

I woudln't know when they did it, as I rarely use the other accounts. I actually rarely buy anything from Amazon now that I think about it. I just use the marketplace and read reviews

Well - I have a very very rare family name (or rather the precise spelling thereof, heh), but I'd think there could of been other "oops" moments. They said it was because at one time the same credit card was on both accounts, but we checked and that was actually untrue.

And same. Amazon is a great way of checking up on books...
