the management utility is available for windows and macos.
There doesn't seem to be an Airport Utility app. But it seems like a natural for an iPad.

I think he's asking for an app that can run on the iPhone or iPad. So the laptop doesn't need to go on vacation with you.

well there is no iphone/ipad app to configure the APE as far as i know. and there is no web interface to configuration either. so you'd have to use a laptop to set it up the first time, but after that you won't need one again unless you want to change a setting or do a firmware upgrade. in the 2 years i have had mine i have never had to change my settings at any hotel i've used it at. so if you can suffer carrying around the laptop once, or set it up at home, then you shouldn't need to worry again.

Deb was right - I'm looking for an app. Maybe I should have capitalized it.

It seems to me that Apple ought to be thinking about - it's an old idea that seems to have gone nowhere, & I suppose their idea was that there was no reason to make one for the Touch. But the iPad is different, since it functions to some extent like a laptop on the road.

But you are right - the workaround for now is to take my laptop to a hotel I know has wired internet access.

Hmm. Do you suppose you could give me the settings, & I could set it up at home? Or is some kind of feedback interaction necessary?

Hi guys, could you please start a new thread under iPad where we can discuss how to set up airport utility? I'm sure many people will be veryinterested. No-one will find it here in this thread.
Thanks .

Plus the iPad is a great value. If I upgraded to the Sony PRS-900 for the iPad size screen, it cost $400. And it reads books and newspapers. The ipad does music, movies, photos, email, internet, light gaming, launches with 160,000 apps (including every reading format) and ..... books and newspapers.... with light and in color...for $100 more.
I also bought a prs-900 for the larger screen, but like the poster earlier said, my MAIN goal is to read full-size (nearly) pdfs. I have had an irex iliad, and the 900, and a prs-505 before, but the pdfs always sucked (IMHO). I was also looking at the plastic logic, but it is a 1.0 product, by a no previous product company, and there were lots of features I wanted (as happy add-ons) but they were vaporware. I felt a bit burned by irex, as a lot of the promises they made with the iliad never came to fruition. Opening the linux kernel was a brilliant move, as there were many talented developers doing work on it, but still, the product did not live up to it's hype.

I will buy an ipad, I have an ipod touch which I listen to on my walk to work each morning, mainly podcasts, which are managed nicely within itunes. I also want to bring my calendar and email with me, as well as the thousands of pages of manuals/legislation, etc for work, and I want it to fit neatly into my briefcase with my lunch.

Ever since I got my ipod touch, I wished it had a bigger screen, now I can have just that.

When I get home at night, I can lean back in my chair with a cup of coffee, and browse this site, do my emailing, and such, and not have to hunch over a computer for even more hours than I already do.

[rant on]
I cut my teeth on personal computing way before IBM had their first PC. In those days there was a thriving hobby community where everyone was excited to help and share what they had cobbled together. You learned and had fun by doing. I created my own Forth and BASIC interpreters and C compilers so I could grok how they worked. I wrote a screen-based text editor in PL/I. I built my own prom burners, 110/300 baud modems, etc. Without these I wouldn't have the skills that make me so marketable.

Now take Apple as an example. Out came the Apple II and a community really thrived. User's would learn how to get in there and modify just about everything. You didn't want to wake up your parents with the startup "chime", you peeked and poked the loader to prevent it. Come forward to today... The iPhone has gone the other extreme. Hackers are constantly thwarted, if they get in, then they are blocked in the next release. Same with iTunes, blocking access by the Palm WebOS products.

The iPad is a computer, but you no longer own it. If Apple wants to disable it or prevent you from reading a book remotely they can. I fear for the hackers of today since they will be blocked out of playing with the devices they paid for. It's turning the next generation into a bunch of watchers and gotta-havers instead of doers. I fear for our home-grown engineering talent. You wouldn't have a Jobs or Gates if they were part of today's generation, and I blame it specifically on the greed of the Jobs and Gates of previous generations.

I have more respect for Gates after his marriage to Melinda. Her values have really turned him around and form the Foundation, but the damage has already been done to the current generation of technical entrepreneurs.

I base all this on my personal experience. The resumes that cross my desk have changed. There is no passion in most anymore. I used to find something that I could talk about when I give an interview besides direct work experience, but no longer. Where are the audiophiles, or HAM operators that actually build something? Where is the involvement with a community group, athletics, or their DJ business? Something that I can hear real excitement. My hiring interviews have become short and boring, all I can do is press them for their job related experience.
[rant off]
Replace computer with automobile/any other sort of old tech which has become a consumer device.

There used to be lots of innovation/hacking with autos when it was a young industry, full of hobbyists.

But I now just wat it to work without be having to know the horrible innerworkings. (don't get me wrong, I programmed assembler on my c-64 as a child, and do internetworking and IT security for work), but at the end of the day, when I get home. I want to sit in my chair, and just simply crank out some emails, and surf for things I have an interest in.

(I do plan on downloading the SDK, and learning to develop on it, I wish I could use python, as that is my lingua-franca these days, but I will save that for my linux box).

Not sure if it is a no-brainer, but I will queue-up for the no-3G/16GB version when it gets released. What other device is available that is comfortable on the go, that allows me to read PDFs and browse the web from my couch, from an airplane seat, and from a hotel room bed?

There are several tablets coming to market this year. One in particular is the Notion Ink Adam.

I'm not bashing. I own a MacBook Pro and iPod Touch.
