So, do you want to know what my story will be about, or should I surprise you? I am stuck home with strep throat this weekend so I will probably write it now.

I'll be editing. And I don't have a problem with that at all. I haven't heard anything about anyone else writing Poe stories. Feel free to write two or three stories too.

No one else is letting the cat out of the bag yet, if you want to be the first then go for it. Or you can surprise us at print =)

You've got nothing to worry about with passive aggressive or anything else. I've been around here for a while now. I don't think the others think I'm a bit of a brat, right guys? =)

...Right?

If there's something that needs work or rework when I get a submission, I'll work with you the best I can to make the story speak.

Okay, I have my first three titles now:

Bust: What did the Raven quoth? Not many know, except the man who sent the Raven on that stormy night. A man you now meet in this dark tale of mechanical birds, terrified writers and the secret contained within a bust of Pallas (but which Pallas might that be?)

The Tell-Tale Hat: a re-imagining, a re-hatting of Poe's short story "The Tell-Tale Heart", wherein I replace heart with hat and the mad loathing of a stranger, with the mad loathing of a stranger's hat (but also rewrite the whole damn thing, instead of pulling a literary addendum job). A story about passion, about Millinery, about 2,000 words

Kiss Me Edgar: It's 1935, the pulp magazines are still in full swing, and detective/writer Harry Cordwainer is about to find out that life and the pulps are sometimes the same. A man claiming to be `H.P. Lovecraft has called, he needs someone, a fellow writer to verify a strange occurrence. There's a mysterious visitor in the local graveyard, a writer friend they all know, an author who should have died in 1849....

That's all I have so far Although I do have one more title I'm working from, which I like:

Christopher Walken's Murderous Monkey.

A bit off topic as I got here late...

Harlan Ellison did a similar project (not CC, mind you. There was no such thing back then) called Medea: Harlan's World. He made available a fully created star system and earthlike planet to hard science specifications and had sci fi writers create stories that take place on it. it was a buncha years ago; and as I recall, the stories didnt captivate me. But the world building was fascinating.

I loved Medea. Especially the worldbuilding; have only dim memories of the stories themselves.

There's a more recent shared-world science fiction book, called Murasaki, edited by Silverberg, with stories by Poul Anderson, Greg Bear, Gregory Benford, David Brin, Nancy Kress and Frederick Pohl. Everyone involved was a Nebula winner.

The worldbuilding was placed at the end, and was more interesting to me than the actual stories, although those were also good.

cool I thought I was the only one to have picked up Medea.

George RR Martin did the wild card series as editor. He made the conditions - not really a world - and other wrote many of the stories.

I loved the Wild Cards series. (I'm behind; I read the first 12 + 2 or 3 of the Card Sharks, and then lost track of them.)

Thieves' World, edited by Asprin, was another shared world in the Fantasy genre. I remember the editorial notes--in book 3, Lynn Abbey mentioned being a bit surprised at how first book was a bit heavy on gore & violence. And that book 2, Tales from the Vulgar Unicorn, "didn't ooze out of the mailbox; it ate right through the metal."

Hmm, other shared worlds...

There've been group collaborations in Lackey's Valdemar and Bradley's Darkover, but those aren't the same--they're very much "1 author made the world; everyone else got permission to participate."

Any flexibility on the length? I have a short-short that I think would fit in the tradition of Poe called "Spinning" and was posted here:

pardon me while I keep drifting this...

I remember Thieves World.

There was a couple of books based on a sci-fi/punk/Fantasy shared world called Borderlands. It came and went quick though. lots of fun

Keep in mind that the Sherlock Holmes universe isn't actually PD in the US yet (or is it?) due to all the crazy copyright extensions. I think it's got another 13 years or so to go.

At least according to a recent NY Times article... http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/19/bo...pagewanted=all

But come on, 120+ years is fair isn't it?

edit: oops - didn't realize I'd missed the last page

I do, though, think this is a fantastic idea. I've been slowly sketching out my own ideas for a shared universe. I've been wanting to find a web-programmer who can help setup a database to track characters, time-lines, connections, etc. to create, basically, a wiki for the universe.

One of my favorite series. They lost their way a bit after the first series, but the most recent one I read seemed to have things back on track. An under-recognized classic series.

Wouldn't it have to be an image of someone famous with a mustache made out of Poe?
