I'm going to have to give this some thought. I read some truly wonderful stories this last year.

For me the best reads of 2009 would have to be the Codex Alera series by jim Butcher, I wasn't overly impressed by the Dresden series so was a bit unsure about trying these but I'm so glad I did.

I didn't recommend it, just said it was my favorite read of 2009. The movie is set to be released 15 January 2010 so you might want to move it up your list.

Good luck with your to read list.

My personal pics were:
The Quincunx
The Story of Edgar Sawtelle
The Fool

Don't think any of them were 2009 releases though...I read some good 2009 books but none of them reached the engagement level I had with those three - suspense and curiousity for The Quincunx, sympathy and outright bawling for Edgar Sawtelle and guffaws and admiration for the cleverness of The Fool.

I have bookmarked that site as scanning through it I realize that I want to read every one of those books Except the one that I did read by Audrey Niffeneger (which I quite liked) and possibly except the Nicholas Sparks book who I don't read on principle due to his sadistic tendency to kill off his characters and leave someone wallowing in misery.

Ok, after a lot of thinking I'm going to go with "Tigana" by Guy Gavriel Kay as my favourite read of 2009.
(un)fortunately, after reading this thread my "to be read" list for 2010 is threatening to spill over into 2011!

So what was the best thing you read in 2009?

The Book of Night Women by Marlon James. It was the first book I read on my then-new e-reader. It is such a meaty and complex story. I am queueing up more of James' work to read in 2010.

I second "Old Man's War". Man, I must have been living under a rock to have not read that one earlier.

My choice is Laurence Durrel's "The Alexandria Quartet" and as a second place: Toni Morrisson's "Beloved".

Good choices, I enjoyed those books as well, maybe I'll re-read them in 2010. Welcome to MobileRead!
