I even had to build a special ramp for them so they could walk up on the grooming table by themselves. It's such a pain to bathe them while they stand on the ground, so we bought a grooming table with a good work height.

And I also want a third goggie... But currently that is not an option really. I need to win the lottery, buy my farm in the country and quit working first

Sounds a bit like my plan and then write a book for PilotBob to read.

Ahh, sorry. It kicks like a mule, right in the heart, doesn't it?

I lost my Monty near three years ago to nasal cancer. I wasn't ready for Oscar, who was a rescue, but a few weeks after Monty died, when the rescue coordinator asked (because I was the only person she knew well enough in the area with Airedale experience) if I could check on this 8yo Sydney Airedale someone wanted to give up as a handful ...well, he ended up coming home with us. He wasn't a handful; he was and is a big, loving, hugging armful.

Monty will always be my "heart dog". Oscar doesn't replace, and who'd want a new dog to do that anyway? He is, however, like them all: a whole new personality that gives way way more of his unique self than it seems us humans can ever give back (even those of us who try so hard to, hey? ). That he came when I needed it, for multiple reasons, is just serendipity to be thankful for.

We've said we'll wait. We want to do some national and international travel, and we know we won't while we have the dogs. When inevitability opens that window (Airedales live average 12 years), we'll use it for a bit (maybe just 6-12 months), and then we'll bring dogs back into our lives. Then, maybe three.

Pffft.... no need to do that just to write a book for Bob to read... Just a 2 page thing and call it "Paris Hiltons autobiography part 2 (With pictures)" and he'll gobble it up right away.

aw. it might sound silly but there's something really sweet about a dog that size being afraid of the dark and climbing into bed with you for comfort.

i feel that way (most of the time...) about my cats. i didn't want a cat, wasn't looking for a cat, and then suddenly i found myself with *two* cats. but when someone says "just give them away, then you could go away on weekends whenever you want" i just stare at them, shocked they could even suggest such a thing. they get to you, don't they ?

i try not to think about the day when i won't have my cats anymore but i'm not sure i'd get another, at least not right away. partly because like you said you can't "replace" them, and partly because (like you said...) it does make holidays a lot more complicated.
