Webscriptions just added a bunch of Harlan Ellison's books. Not sure I would recommend him to a beginner though.

To get a taste of science fiction is like asking for recommendations on Chinese food. It is a very broad category. Here are some of my favorites based on flavor.

Spy / Espionage / Alien Invasion - Heinlein - The Puppet Masters

Alien Interaction - Clement - Mission Of Gravity

Alien Interaction Epic - Niven / Pournelle - The Mote in Gods Eye

Exploration - Pohl - Gateway (Not at all what you might expect but a page turner)

Military - Heinlein - Starship Troopers
Military - Haldeman - The Forever War
Military - Weber - Honor Harrington Series

Humorous - Adams - Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy
Humorous - Harrison - The Stainless Steel Rat

Epic Political - Herbert - Dune

Cyberpunk / Computer Related - Stephenson - Snow Crash
Cyberpunk / Computer Related - Neuromancer

Alien Invasion - Clarke - Childhood's End
Alien Invasion Epic - Niven / Pournelle - Footfall

Social - Heinlein - Stranger In A Strange Land
Social - Alien - Asimov - The Gods Themselves
Social - Varley - Titan / Wizard / Demon (trilogy)

Time Travel - Varley - Millenium
Time Travel - Asimov - End Of Eternity

Short Storie Collections -
Science Fiction Hall Of Fame Vol 1
Heinlein - The Past Through Tomorrow
Niven - Collections other than Man-Kzin Wars

I hope this is helpful.

I see this is already 5 pages. Maybe I'm too late, but have you read The Hobbit yet? It was written by a fellow countryman and is possibly the most famous fantasy book of all time.

I don't believe it is free, but your library probably has it and there have GOT to be cheap second-hand copies floating around. If you like it, read The Lord of the Rings. If not, it is an easy read, only a few hundred pages. (Tolkien wrote it for his son as a boy)

I haven't read Clement's Mission of Gravity, thanks for mentioning it! I will! Hand's down queen of alien interaction in my readings is Cherryh. Foreigner series, Chanur series, some standalone works. Other than that, I'm largely in agreement.

The original poster's background is fantasy so I would recommend Randall Garrett's Lord Darcy series as a starting point. Not really science fiction but an excellent series using science fiction-like structure - Garrett builds an entirely believable world using laws of magic instead of laws of physics. Then I would go with Lester del Rey and perhaps some Ray Bradbury or Theodore Sturgeon.
