No doubt about it. I think readers are getting it good too, what with all the freebies from the big corps and all the good stuff from the indies

Well, apparently if you promise to drop the F bomb, you'll get standing room only at a convention. I tried to go to the Knights who say f*** panel, which is about modern language creeping into fantasy, but there wasn't even room to get in the door. Which immediately triggered my claustrophobia, so I am writing instead.

I just met Peadar O Guilin by chance. He was sitting and talking with a friend and I read everyone's badge if I can. He instructed me on how ot actually pronounce his name. (Peadar rhymes with badder.) He regrets that he will not be at the meetup tonight, because he has a previous engagement that he needs to keep.

It was great to meet pshrynk He comes across as a real gentleman, but it's a bummer that I won't be able to make it to the meet-up -- I'm in the midst of setting up a party right now with the rest of the George R.R. Martin fan club (Brotherhood Without Banners).

On the other hand, I met the first ever person who ever admitted to having bought the kindle version of my novel, so it's not all bad.

I have been evangelizing the pros of e-ink all week and showing off my Sony and answering the usual protests of "but I can't read a whole book off a screen"... We'll see if I get any converts.

Just got back from the meetup. Yvan and Verencat both took pix, so I'm sure they'll stay up all night posting them.

My afternoon was spent in going to panels on writing, editing and publishing. I always get pumped up by these conferences, so I have decided that I'm going to follow SUmkIII's prodding and start writing. That may take a while, but I'm going to start submitting again.

Also, I have some ideas for thread in the Writer's Corner and some e-mail addresses of publishers and writers who I am going to invite to join us for discussions there.

Right now, I'm listening to the 900 dB noise coiming from the FrancoFolies festival just outside my room. (I'm 6 floors or more up.) So much for booking the "quiet" hotel... (think SHUMS with electric guitars and amps that go to 11...)

Woke up late from a combination of getting back to the hotel late and having a Punk Rock Cover of Really Bad Ska Band playing outside my window until the wee hours, so I've been to one panel this morning on writing outside one's own culture. I hadn't really thought of it too much, but I guess my answer to questions of "What were you thinking?" would have to be, "Well, here's me, thinking that the talking dog would have been the first clue that it's fantasy..."

Next up: Writing for a Living. Answer: Probably going to be a while before I can hang up my shingle...

Well the Writing for a Living panel was what I predicted. The modern writer needs to have breakout books every few years to remain viable since there are no longer "back lists." I think that this may change with the advent of e-books, since one can keep the backlists out there without incurring printing fees. Personally, I'm going to have a hhard time justifying dumping the day job untilo I reach Neil Gaiman levels of sales, since I get massively overpaid as a physician...

Next up: Gateway Drugs. Perdonally, I'm all for them... Wait, it's about big blockbuster series like Harry Potter and whether or not they increase readership of other authors.

for the reportage Pshrynk.

Are the ebook related events being well attended generally?

There's a pretty fair attendance and many people have readers. I've seen more Kindles in the wild here than in the year and a half that I've owned one. There are lots of people with other readers, as well.

Tonite really wraps it up with the Hugos at eight o'clock. Tomorrow morning there are some panels I may go to or I may sleep in, since I'll be getting home at midnite and have to go to work at seven on Tuesday.

Depends on the energy level I am feeling at the time, I guess.

i went to an "Interstellar Trade" panel with Larry Niven this afternoon. He says Hi, Ricky... Pretty interesting. All aobut how we are going to have to re-invent commerce to trade with any alien species we discover, since a billion dollar bottle of wine might not be a quick sale (Once you figure in the transport costs.) Information seems to be the proposed standard of trade for the future...

Just to set the record straight, I'm not an editor at Tor, though Tor is publishing one of my novels; and I wasn't on the panel you're describing and I didn't say the above, though I don't doubt that it's true and that someone who actually is an editor and knows what they're talking about said it.

It wouldn't effect it at all from the publishers point of view. They have the source.

Sorry, I took down everyone's name in my notes. Must have switched you with someone else. Edit: Someone who said he was an editor at Tor, who is, apparently, not Felix Gilman said the above.
