Anyone know if the PRS-600 body is still aluminum?
If the PRS-600 is as good as the 505, I will buy one asap. My wife who is reading more and more on her PDA want an e-ink reader too. I considered buying her a PRS-300 and keeping the 505, but I 'm disappointed with the 300 form factor -the 300 looks as big as the 600 with its large screen bezel-. |

505 (122 x 172 x 8mm) 300 (107.8 × 157.5 × 10.2 mm) 600 (121 × 174.3 × 9.8 mm) The PRS-505 have a screen that is 44% bigger than the 300. But according to the leaked service manual the PRS-505 body is only 23% bigger. The bezel is comparatively bigger on the 300. As they dropped the audio jack, and two memory card slots, I would have expected the PRS-300 to be comparatively smaller. According to the manual the 300 is thicker too. Perhaps they used plastic instead of aluminium for the 300, we will know more soon. Last edited by Faenad; 08-05-2009 at 12:19 PM. |

The 300 comes in Rose, Blue and Silver, I would give the edge to the Blue or Silver. I'd like to see one next to a 505 for comparision.

I think Sony could've added a lot of other features to, such as the 16 grey scale that was previously mentioned. I'd be suprised if it did have a faster page turn. But I think Sony is getting smart and are looking to make things that are affordable so instead of loading it with a lot of features and having a hefty price tag, it seems like they are taking a new approach and are sticking with what works and selling that at an affordable price.
From what I've been reading about Sony in the past, it seems like their attitude was that they made products thinking people will buy it because it's a "SONY" product and Sony can price it as high as they want and load it with a lot of new tech and people will be eager to grab it. But i think the PS3 has changed their perception about themselves and how consumers view their brand. I kind of seeing this happening to Apple, offering good hardware but at a premium. Seems like Sony is now thinking about making things that people want and what people can actually afford instead of making things that they think people should buy. Smart move if it continues and definately headed in the right direction in my opinion. Hope there next move is to work on improving customer support and offering new features that aren't just released and cost tons of money, but releasing new features that have become affordable and functional. I also want to see a better discount offered on their other books that aren't on the best sellers list. Seems like other stores out compete them there. I also want to see them come out with much better software. Hope they get some good programmers. In my opinion, the software is very lacking from Sony. Migration of Sony eBook Store content
Though I have largely migrated over to the Kindle, the Sony PRS-505 still has a place in my heart, largely because of the fine mechanical design. Having something "pocket sized" has a lot of appeal to me, especially if it is as nice as my current model.
My question is this: I've purchased a handful of titles from the Sony eBook store for my PRS-505. Do you suppose there will be some mechanism that would allow me to use those on a new model? Or, will those books be forever married to my current reader? Similarly, the announcement of support for Macintosh clients is welcomed (one of the reasons I walked away from the 505, really). Has anybody seen a beta of the software or have any idea of migration from the PC client to the Mac client will be easy/difficult/impossible? I suspect "impossible", but I'm a pessimist when it comes to expectations from a primarily PC-oriented company like Sony. -- Scott |

I can't wait for the mac software either. I bought a Kindle because I was tired of having to use my PC to purchase books (when it collects dust most of the time) and I like Amazon's prices for best sellers. Though, now with the mac software coming out and the new pricing for best sellers as well as new releases (this beats Amazon), I will more than likely be selling my Kindle to help pay for my 600. or should I say my Touch Reader ![]() |

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the books you purchase from the Sony eBook store is not locked into a particular Sony model. It's locked into your account. So if you pucrhase another Sony reader of the same model or different model, all you have to do is register it on the same account from which you bought your books. Then those books will become redeable on that device. However, there is a limit to how many machines/readers you have registered with your account. I think the total number is 6 machines, meaning computers and reading devices. However, you can always de-authorize machines that are no longer in use. |

Going out on a limb here...
I guess both models have a metal case, considering the weight and the construction of Sony's other models? Not that plasitc is a poor choice for a reader, but my current 505 would likely have given up the goat a while ago if it has been made of lesser stuff. It's got some dents and dings, but it is still very functional. Better dents than cracks. Duffel bags, convoys, carry-ons, body armor - they all take there toll on a device. |
