But the answer is indeed zero. After all of the hype in the '60s about astronauts and Tang, I was stunned a few years ago to learn that there wasn't any on Apollo 11. (It was on other Apollo missions, but Armstrong and crew preferred a different drink, and that's what they took.) Next thing you know, we'll find out that Santa hates milk and cookies. |

Personally, I believe they went to the Moon. But part of me wishes they hadn't!
As it was mainly a political PR stunt to show up the Russians (as evidenced by the fact that we never did anything up there afterward)... and as today, if the Russians, the Chinese, the Japanese or the Duchy of Grand Fenwick actually went up there and stomped all over our flag, we couldn't do a thing about it... I've grown to feel that it was a colossal waste of time. On the other hand... One of the greatest things about the Apollo program is how well it demonstrated the ability of Americans to pull together, and to develop new technologies, to get something BIG done, an effort not seen since WWII. Something we could use today in our need for alternative energy and transportation systems. People talk about our needing a "Manhattam Project" for our energy situation, whereas I prefer to think we need an "Apollo Program" (but that won't be abandoned when we reach some trivial milestone). |

Here's a pretty interesting article about "just" the computer technology that was spawned from the NASA programs. http://www.computerworld.com/s/artic...ource=rss_news
That doesn't even include contributions to medicine and environmental stuff and all the other sciences. Last edited by wayspooled; 07-20-2009 at 04:45 PM. |

I remember drinking Tang. It wasn't one of my favorites, but I also remember eating some kind of energy stick or something. It was probably around the size of a thick pencil. Can't for the life of me remember what it was called or even what it tasted like, but I remember I liked them and they had something to do with the space program.

I remember those energy sticks, too. Was it Space Food Sticks? More about Space Food Sticks here.

So that's what they were called -- Space Food Sticks. How imaginitive.
![]() I'll tell you what Krisk, when I was a kid if they dipped cat poo in chocolate I probably would have liked it. Hopefully my tastes have matured since then. (You'd probably need to use dark chocolate). |

Tang + alcohol from the sick bay pharmacy... Made for one hell of a New Years Eve on duty. But that's the Military for ya!

Apparently a couple of hospitals in the UK took all the alcohol gel hand cleaner units off the walls near entrances and in busy public areas such as A&E (the UK equiv. of ER) as they were concerned people would steal them for the alcohol content

I remember vividly sitting in my uncle's 55 Chevy with my grandfather by the shore of the lake and listening to the radio as Armstrong announced "The Eagle has landed." My uncle had just been killed in Viet Nam. Later that night, I lay on the floor of the living room and watched the grainy black and white images of the first footprint.
I don't care that Apollo was a result of the Cold War. Of all mankind's greatest achievements, it was the most exciting, wonderful, and noble. |
